Thank you for your inquiry.  In addition to being the editor of the newsletter I am a retired LAPD Lieutenant.  As a means of further introduction you may find my CV at http://www.police-technology.net/raymond.foster.cv.html.

First, go here:

http://www.hitechcj.com/criminal-justice-degree-online/

Use the navigation links to look at criminal justice employment, then scroll down to the ATF page and look at the job requirements.

Okay, as you look through those, to qualify for a “grade 5” position you need a BA.  Indeed, a BA would help you get hired.

So, what to do now.  The first thing is to make sure any education you begin is from an accredited university. Read through this article on criminal justice education as well as accrediation issues:

http://www.hitechcj.com/id230.html

Now go to

https://www.earmyu.com/Login.aspx

Since you are in the military, there are a ton of programs that you can take advantage of, specifically look here:
https://www.earmyu.com/public/public_degree_plan_browse.aspx

This gives you a list of colleges that you can work through to begin working on a degree.  Since you are going for the ATFE, a criminal justice degree, with a science minor (lots of science in their investigations) will help you out.

Finally, take a look at what is offered in the way of testing here:

http://www.dantes.doded.mil/Dantes_web/DANTESHOME.asp

And, browse here
