Reader Asked:

I was wondering if there is any way to take a pre test for police academy? so I will know what kind of questions will be there. Also, I want to know if you know any physical requirements to get into police academy and physical requirements to pass the academy. Its all in Sanford, Florida.

Answer:

Here is your likely best source of information:

http://www.fdle.state.fl.us/cjst/exam/

In addition to reviewing the state process for certification (it gives you clues on what you should learn in the police academy and what the final test will be like), click on the training links.  From there you can find the screening locations and the different training locations.

Here are some helpful hints I found:

Q. What standards must I meet to enter the Candidate Pool?

A. All the standards are published in our Applicant Information Package (AIP). You can get an AIP at our office, we can mail one to you, or you can download it directly from this web site. (When you register for the PASS process, you will be asked to acknowledge that you have read and understand the AIP.)

Q. What testing is done in the process?

A. Applicants must pass a state mandated Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJ-BAT) and we also conduct a writing test. These are multiple-choice tests and, taken together, last about half of a day. We normally test every Tuesday morning, but if you are traveling from out of town or have some other genuine conflict, we can arrange an alternate time by appointment. You must register with PASS in order to be scheduled for the test. Please remember that unexcused failure to attend a scheduled test appointment will result in an additional test fee.

Here are links to all the information you probably need:
  • Officer Employment Requirements - Minimum qualifications that an applicant must possess in order to be eligible for certification as a sworn criminal justice officer in the State of Florida.

  • Officer Mandatory Retraining Requirements - Continued training or education required at the rate of 40 hours every 4 years.  It shall be job-related and consistent with the needs of the employing agency.  (Quick matrix reference: Mandatory Retraining Requirements.pdf)
  • Equivalency - The Equivalency of Training process is for Out-of-State/Federal Officers and/or previously certified Florida officers with a four year or more break-in-service pursuant to section 943131(2), Florida Statutes and Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.) 11B-35.009(4)(5).  The Equivalency of Training process is an avenue by which an officer can request an exemption from the full academy.

  • Basic Abilities Test (BAT) - During the 2000 session, the Florida Legislature passed House Bill 1481 requiring applicants entering into a criminal justice basic recruit program to successfully pass a Commission-approved basic abilities test.

  • Physical Ablities Test (PAT) - The primary goal of the PAT is to determine if an individual possesses the basic skills to perform the physical tasks required of criminal justice officers. In order to achieve this goal, the PAT was designed to assess physical attributes that reflect core enabling knowledge, skills and abilities, and essential tasks common for law enforcement, corrections and correctional probation officers.

  • Criminal Justice Agency Profile (CJAP) - The Criminal Justice Agency Profile Report is compiled annually to capture the required compensation and benefits data established under F.S. ch 943.18.
While not specifically for Florida, you might want to take a look at the police officer exam book offered here:
