As much as old cops like myself yearn for doing police work the old fashion way, the advancement of information technology and science for law enforcement cannot be ignored and I will pass on to my co-workers that we must adapt to this technology as quickly as possible to assist us in our crime fighting efforts.

What part of what you learned are you going to incorporate into what you will train those who follow you?

I will try to emphasize the importance of preparing for new technology by establishing a sound foundation in current technology. I will also try to incorporate the use of all the law enforcement related websites available to assist with everything from gathering statistics to applying for federal funding.

I strongly agree we must adapt to new technology as quickly as possible. Taking advantage of technology is the only way law enforcement will be able to meet future challenges of doing more police work with less officers.

I also will express the importance of finishing your degree...  I wish I didn't wait until almost 40 to finish mine...

Curry,

I agree...  what we learned in this course would really help other officers understand the whole picture.  I know if I would have known some of this, it would have answered some of my questions years ago...

This class as well as the others I've taken here at Union have been invaluable.  I've already shared things I've learned with not only my peers; but, my supervisors.  They have appreciated the info too; and, they're starting to talk about going back to school.  Wonder if Union will give me a finder's fee.. lol

Hopefully everything.  We are in Sgt. testing now and my appointment with the Chief is set for April 27.  When I speak with him I will be much more able to articulate what I am trying to do and (hopefully) if promoted, information I pass along to subordinates will be more clearly communicated because of techniques I learned here.  BILL

Bill,

Steve's a young wippersnapper... I'm in your boat too ;)

We're still above ground and we're doin' it.

Hmmm... I had to read that a couple'a times

Boy time flies. For me, I honestly enjoyed the non-technology lectures.

With my class work I was able to develop my thoughts on projects I’m currently implementing at my agency. Some of what I’ve done for this class I will use in the training I am developing.

Who knows, maybe I’ll get one of my papers published in a police technology newsletter. Wouldn’t that be a hoot.

You all be safe out there.

Dennis

I will pass on the importance of continued education and learning. Leadership and technology training would be my priority. I believe both go hand in and in order to run an effective police department.

The most important thing I have learned is to be aware of the various technologies out now that can assist in police work. Its important to have an open mind about any topic. The way things are done are not always the right or only way.

Continued education seems to be a popular topic to share with others. It is extremely important and I have already started trying to convince some of the newer/younger officers to do the same.

I will stress the importance of keeping up with technology.  I made the mistake of taking a casual attitude toward learning my way around the computer.  I thought it was really cool to say that I was "old school" and I did not need to learn how to navigate a computer.  But this class has taught me the importance of keeping up with technological advancements.

I too would encourage others to continue their education.  But in this difficult financial time, I know not everyone has the luxury to obtain a degree.  Instead of finishing my bachelor right out of high school, I pursued my goal in becoming a Police Officer, then when I was financially sound and could rely on my steady income, I decided I was in a better position to continue my education.  On the other hand, my friends who finished school before pursuing their career are still struggling to be secure in their jobs.  So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't regret putting off college while I pursued my career.  School will always be here and we never stop learning, our jobs on the other hand are our livelihoods.

I have learned a great deal, especially from this class.  I thought that I had a pretty good knowledge of computers and investigation tools.  I was a former dispatcher before becoming an officer, so i was quite familiar with different CAD systems, etc. When I began this class, I was amazed at how much is really out there as tools for us to use.  I will definitely be taking back some of the different websites and technology tools such as the calling cards to help aid me and others in our investigations.

I strongly agree with you. I by passed my education to establish my law enforcement career. I feel going to school now I have a better appreciation for education and its importance. Its never late to learn something new. Good luck to you.

I agree with you being a sound listener is always a good quality and stressing the importance of continuing education.  I cannot wait for this educational ride to come to a close.  Although the case, so far so good!

I have learned alot at union, some of the most important things i learned is the importance of leadership and technology. I think being a strong leader to your peers and subordinates would bring high employee moral.
