This is participation number two for students in the following courses:

All Union Institute and University Winter 2009

(Includes Session I, Session II and Semester Learners)

You must make two posts to receive full credit.

You have completed an undergraduate course in your criminal justice degree.

What part of what you learned are you going to incorporate into what you will train those who follow you?

I have learned so much, I will try to take as much as I can back to those around me. I will try to teach how to further our community policing model and how ehtics work into doing a good and right job, and how that helps us make good decisions in and away from work.

I will do my best in teaching others what has worked for me, as a result of going back to school and obtaining my degree.

The number one thing I will promote, is being a good listener and to keep an open mind.

For the entire program I will impress about people the real value of continuing their education. Researching other ideas and ways of doing things can only benefit them.

For the Police Technology course I must again say that I will really inform people about all the technology and information that is available for our use. There is just so much we do not know that we can know if we just know where to look for it. That will be my main effort to teach that knowledge.

That is a great attitude. People who work for you will love you for passing on what you know. I know anytime someone I work for takes the time to teach me something it lifts my morale.

I will simply try and pass on what I have learned whether it be about technology or the simple fact of meeting and networking with so many other L.E. officers trying to reach the same goal as I am.

I have been blessed with mentors who beleived in me and encouraged me to continue my education. I will do the same for those officers who seek my advice.

I would love to be able to inspire others to listen to each and don't be too quick to judge.  I would remind them to remember their past employers/supervisors and make a decision to be better than they were and not repeat their mistakes. I would encourage them to build relationships and set a good example for those that are always watching, whether it be coworkers or people we come across every day.

I'm going to incorporate this whole program into my daily activities. I will play a more active role in selling to others the importance of an educational background. This course has allowed me to basically step outside police work and have others, our professors, look at another side of me, a learning side, not the side that we know best, basic police work. It was refreshing to do something different and network with other people from other agencies.

Response to 3rd post.

I like it. Simply put, "Give back to others and listen with an open mind." Might make a good "Mission" statement.

The thing I will teach others from what I have learned is how to use specific website to locate certain information in the law enforcement field. I will also teach others that going back to finish your formal education is not as hard as it may seem in your head.

I agree meeting other officers from other departments and the networking that came along with it is priceless. Like the saying goes "it's all who you know".

I hope to not only challenge myself to become more involved with the technology aspect I have learned, but I want to challenge newer officers to train themselves and others how to use technology help them with intel, search warrants, tracking, etc.

Lori,

I have already learned how to manage my way through this complicated web-site with your help.  If I can do this, I can teach others how to learn what we have.

Hey RIch,

I wasn't concerned about you or James.  I saw both of your posts; and, I knew you both were on top of it.  I just wanted to make sure that everyone else on our team(group) got full credit for class participation.

I'm going to bring my laptop tonight just in case anyone else wants a quick tutorial. See ya then. LaW

Through our website project, I have learned about a vast amount of resources that are out there. Already, I have mentioned some things to the people in my unit and they have sounded interested about some possible training opportunities.

During a lecture, we were advised on joining groups/associations. I previously was never interested joining but learned that it can have some benefits. I joined an association and already attended a very informative training.

I have learned a lot in my time at Union.  I have learned how to deal with difficult situations and the best ways to work through them.  I have definitely learned beneficial supervisory skills and what signs to look for when someone might be headed in the wrong direction.

I completely agree with you about encouraging people to continue their education.

I enjoy computers and the Internet pretty much, but until this Police Technology course thrusted me into our online discussion forums, I used to feel like message boards and forums were places where people wasted time by posting stupid comments.

Having participated in the required police online forums, I have read some interesting concepts and seen many supportive comments. As I discuss training sources with employees and supervisors in the future, I will make sure to point out that there are very positive and informative sources of information available and good networking opportunities--such as these online forums.

Obviously education is an important issue and cannot be stressed enough.

Also, I've been impressed by some of the lecture material from our class as it relates to understanding how written promotion exams are formulated, and strategies which can be used successfully during oral exams.  I have seen many people over the years that most believed would make great supervisors or managers, but for one reason or another had difficulty with the testing process.

In addition to encouraging education even more, I'm going to make sure to coach some of these people in an effort to help them get over the promotion testing hurdle.
