BREVARD COUNTY, FL—During the week of April 12 through 16, 2010, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) members from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, Patrick Air Force Base, and the FBI will host a weapons of mass destruction (WMD) crime scene school for public safety first responders, evidence technicians, bomb technicians, and military personnel from the central Florida region. Attendees will be from local, county, and federal agencies.
Attendees will receive classroom and field instruction on WMDs consisting of explosives, chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear devices. Topics include improvised explosive devices (IEDs), military ordinance, suicide bombers, laboratory analysis of explosive residue, evidence collection, processing WMD crime scenes, and related legal topics. In addition, attendees will participate in practical exercises and live explosive demonstrations.
The purpose of this school is to enhance the investigators’ fundamental knowledge of explosives and WMDs by expanding their abilities to recognize, assess, and respond to WMD hazardous incidents. The WMD training will aide in the response to suicide attacks, large vehicle bombs, and weapons of mass destruction perpetrated by criminals and terrorists. In addition, agency participants will build partnerships with each other—creating a professional cadre of experts who are conduits of intelligence and critical assets to have around during a crisis.
