"Aventura Police Use Web for Unsolved Murder"

Miami Herald (02/04/07) P. B5; Teproff, Carli

The Aventure Police Department decided to use MySpace.com and YouTube.com to hopefully receive leads in the 2001 slaying of an elderly man. Police posted footage of a person they are seeking in connection with the case at both Web sites. Police are hoping that the postings will lead to identification of the man, who can be seen on surveillance cameras interacting with the murder victim, who died in his apartment from injuries sustained during a vicious beating. South Florida Police have also employed the Internet to discourage violence at a middle school in Hollywood and identify suspects in two cases.

While there are criminals out there that find ways to use the internet to complete their crimes, these new developments (i.e. myspace, youtube) in the world wide web do have their benefits to law enforcement.  In addition to using these sights to seek witness information, officers can use these sights to gather intelligence in order to prevent crimes.  I met an officer who is currently assigned as a school resource officer who has used the similar sights to gather intelligence on illegal activity that his students were involved in.  This has helped him to be very proactive in his role at the school.

We have detectives that work under false names on My Space all the time to identify crooks in all kinds of crimes. Its amazing what these guys will say when they think they are talking to another gang member or predator. We also have our background investigators trained in My Space to search applicants accounts to verify stories and how they live their life.
