"Aventura Police Use Web for Unsolved Murder"
Miami Herald (02/04/07) P. B5; Teproff, Carli
The Aventure Police Department decided to use MySpace.com and YouTube.com to hopefully receive leads in the 2001 slaying of an elderly man. Police posted footage of a person they are seeking in connection with the case at both Web sites. Police are hoping that the postings will lead to identification of the man, who can be seen on surveillance cameras interacting with the murder victim, who died in his apartment from injuries sustained during a vicious beating. South Florida Police have also employed the Internet to discourage violence at a middle school in Hollywood and identify suspects in two cases.

While there are criminals out there that find ways to use the internet to complete their crimes, these new developments (i.e. myspace, youtube) in the world wide web do have their benefits to law enforcement. In addition to using these sights to seek witness information, officers can use these sights to gather intelligence in order to prevent crimes. I met an officer who is currently assigned as a school resource officer who has used the similar sights to gather intelligence on illegal activity that his students were involved in. This has helped him to be very proactive in his role at the school.

| We have detectives that work under false names on My Space all the time to identify crooks in all kinds of crimes. Its amazing what these guys will say when they think they are talking to another gang member or predator. We also have our background investigators trained in My Space to search applicants accounts to verify stories and how they live their life.

| The internet has been a useful tool for law enforcement and at the same time creating a large burden aswell. Working as a School Resource Officer I have used Youtube and Myspace on numerous ocassions with great results, from useful information to felony convictions. Our school Principals are becoming more familiar with these sites and catching students involved in fights, vandalism and other negative activities.

| I am a school resource officer and I use myspace and you tube on a regular basis. I have been able to successfully validate gang members and identify suspects in fights and other crimes. Even though the majority of the kids that I work with know that I am on myspace, they still continue to post things on there. Its like they want to get caught.

| Myspace can also be a great tool for back round investigators. It has help narrow down and eliminate individuals. It not surprising for back round investigators to see applicants having gang affiliation or an individual using/showing possession of drugs on there myspace.

My space, you tube, facebook and Craig's List is helping to solve more and more crimes. Many Defense Attorneys are asking defendant whether they have any of these pages early on because they know it can be used against them.
These criminals post information before they are going commit some crimes, practically giving us an invitation. All we have to do is monitor their site and show up.

Definately a great way to follow people patterns and strange habits. Great for investigative purposes.
