Police Geared Up With New Device to Stop Speeders

The Los Angeles Police Department has begun using Light Detection and Ranging equipment (LIDAR), a new technology to crack down on speeding motorists that can zero in on the speed of a particular vehicle. LIDAR has an optimal operational range of about 1,000 feet and was used to hand out 67 tickets in Sherman Oaks on one recent day. The department says saving lives, not raising revenue, is the main reason for using the technology.

Police Use "Beer Goggles" to Shock Teens Out of Driving Drunk

In Sumter, S.C., high school faculty recently turned the instructional duties over to local police officers who used videos and hands-on simulations to show students the potential consequences of texting and driving or driving while intoxicated. Special goggles allowed students to see the driving course the way it would look to an impaired person.

Hog Heaven: Norwalk Police's New Fleet of Three Harleys

A U.S. Department of Justice grant has paid for two new Harley-Davidson motorcycles for the Norwalk (Conn.) Police Department, and drug-asset forfeitures will pay for a third. The motorcycles will primarily be used for traffic patrol, as well as at ceremonial events and funeral services. Three officers recently participated in three weeks of patrol training, including taking a test in the rain.

Seattle Police Will Turn Wireless Mesh Trials Into More Permanent Solution

A series of surveillance network trials in the city of Seattle has evolved into a permanent solution for the Seattle Police Department. A one-month deployment that included 11 access points in February 2009 expanded into one-year trial, then the city added additional access points in July 2009 for the city's annual Fourth of July celebration. The city expanded the temporary network once again on New Year's Eve 2010, adding more access points near the Space Needle, and expansion efforts continue. The city's project uses commercial off-the-shelf technology and includes data encryption to keep the network secure.

Angel Fire Cops Add Tasers to Arsenal

Members of the Angel Fire (Texas) city council learned recently that their police department will soon be equipped with Tasers and body-worn cameras that can record both audio and video data. The Village of Angel Fire Police Department already owned the Tasers and its officers have all been certified in their use, but they had not previously carried the less lethal devices on routine patrol.

Antioch Police K-9s Receive Ballistic Vests

The city of Antioch, Calif., recently began using body armor for four of its canine officers, courtesy of The Police and Working K-9 foundation. The all-volunteer organizations also provides funding for emergency medical care for working and retired canine officers. Each dog received a custom-made vest weighing approximately five pounds and consisting of three stab-resistant and three ballistic-resistant panels.

Police Unveil Photo/Radar Van

Colorado Springs, Colo., law enforcement officers recently began using a marked van equipped with radar and cameras to catch speeders. The cameras photograph license plate numbers and drivers' faces on cameras; fines of $40 (double if the violation occurs in a school zone) could follow in the mail. An officer parks the van and stays with it near schools, parks, neighborhoods and construction sites.

Brunswick Police Begin Upgrade to Communications System

Brunswick County, N.C., will replace its outdated SmartLink communications system with a connection to the statewide 800-Mhz VIPER network managed by the North Carolina Highway Patrol. VIPER uses wireless transmission towers to relay signals between radios and is used by more than 200 agencies across North Carolina. The state has a long-term objective of connecting every public safety agency in the state to VIPDER.

eWarrant System Now Available in Four More Kentucky Counties

Livingston, Lyon, Caldwell and Trigg counties in Kentucky's 56th Judicial Circuit have completed installation of the eWarrant system, bringing the total number of counties in the state that use the system to 49. The progressive implementation has been funded through a $3.9 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant awarded in 2009. eWarrant facilitates information sharing about active warrants in jurisdictions throughout Kentucky, replacing manual processing with electronic availability though the Law Enforcement Information Network of Kentucky (LINK). Nearly 230,000 warrants and summons have been processed since October 2010.
