UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE ACCESS TO JUSTICE INITIATIVE ATTORNEY ADVISOR, GS-0905-13 to GS-15 ANNOUNCEMENT: A2J ATY-0310
About the Initiative: The Department’s Access to Justice initiative will:
(1) Provide advice, views, alternatives, or recommendations on issues, problems, or questions pertaining to the Justice Department's commitment to improving indigent defense and enhancing the delivery of legal services to the poor and middle class;
(2) Identify and promote alternatives to court-intensive and lawyer-intensive solutions;
(3) Work with and represent the interests of federal, state, and tribal judiciaries in strengthening fair, impartial, and independent adjudication; and
(4) Exchange information with foreign ministries of justice and judicial systems regarding our respective efforts to provide access to justice, working within the Department’s existing international activities devoted to fair and impartial law enforcement and adjudication.
Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered: Access to Justice Initiative is seeking qualified attorney advisors to work closely with top administrative personnel in the Department, private industry, state, local, tribal, and/or foreign governments on legal and policy matters. Selectees will report to the Senior Counselor for Access to Justice through the Deputy Counselor for Access to Justice. She / he will perform varied and significant legal work related to access to justice. She / he will provide counsel and advice regarding the preparation and dissemination of policy to top Department officials. She / he may deliver presentations and briefings for the agency and will assist with the identification and promulgation of best practices in providing assistance in the delivery of legal services to the indigent and middle class at all levels of the legal system.
Qualifications: The work of this initiative requires the application of outstanding analytical, legal research, and writing skills to complex and significant issues. The initiative carries a heavy workload and places a premium on the commitment and ability to produce high-quality work under tight deadlines. Diplomacy, excellent judgment, and a collaborative orientation are highly valued. Individuals with exceptional academic records, judicial clerkship experience, as well as legal experience, either in private practice or in the government, are encouraged to apply.
Required qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any jurisdiction), and have at least 1½ years post-J.D. experience.
