The Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) is the nation's chief environmental litigator, enforcing federal pollution abatement laws to protect the health and environment of the United States and its citizens. ENRD also defends suits challenging environmental and conservation laws, programs, and activities; represents the United States in all matters concerning the protection, use and development of the Nation's natural resources and public lands; and litigates on behalf of Indian tribes and individual Indians.

The Chief of the Law and Policy Section (LPS) oversees a staff of attorneys and legal support who are responsible for advising the Assistant Attorney General on a variety of legal matters concerning environmental and natural resources issues, and assists in the development of Environment Division positions on legislation, policy initiatives and other matters of interest. LPS is responsible for a wide range of special projects and is the Division's point of contact and/or coordinator for a variety of cross-cutting issues relating to ethics, professional responsibility, Alternate Dispute Resolution, international environmental law, environmental justice, Freedom of Information Act requests, Congressional inquiries, citizen suits, amicus requests, pro bono and other matters.
