About the Office: The United States Attorney’s Office, District of South Carolina prosecutes a wide range of criminal offenses, defends the U.S. Government’s interest in civil cases, and litigates affirmative civil fraud and enforcement actions. The United States Attorney’s Office, District of South Carolina, is located in Columbia. In addition to the main office in downtown Columbia, we maintain three staffed offices located in Charleston, Greenville, and Florence, South Carolina. South Carolina offers a wonderful climate and a wide variety of cultural, educational, recreational, and social activities.
Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered: The District of South Carolina is currently seeking highly qualified applicants for Assistant United States Attorney vacancies in our Criminal and Civil Divisions. Criminal Division prosecutors are assigned to General/White Collar Crimes or Drug Enforcement/Violent Crimes sections and our Civil Division defends the interests of the government in lawsuits filed against the United States, referred to as defensive litigation. The present vacancies include:
one or more positions in the General/White Collar Crimes section, where one of the Assistant U.S. Attorneys selected will be dedicated to prosecuting complex cases relating to mortgage fraud.
one position in the Drug Enforcement/Violent Crimes section, where the selectee will prosecute complex cases relating to drugs, money laundering, gang violence, etc.
one defensive litigation position in the Civil Division.
However, staffing may shift during the application process and hired AUSAs may be assigned to any of the three sections. These positions may be filled on a temporary, term or permanent basis. The temporary or term may be extended based on availability of funding. Applicants selected for temporary or term positions may be converted to a permanent position without further competition.
Qualifications: Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree from a law school approved by the American Bar Association, be an active member of the South Carolina bar, and have at least one year post-J.D. experience. (Note: S.C. bar does not grant reciprocity to attorneys who are members of other state bars and the local rules of the United States District Court require South Carolina bar membership for admission to practice before the U.S. District Court. Attorneys who are not current members of the S.C. bar would be expected to take the S.C. Bar exam at the first opportunity, and employment would be contingent on passing the S.C. bar.
Preferred Qualifications: An applicant with a background that demonstrate analytical ability, judgment, and advocacy skills. Candidates must possess a strong academic background, superior legal writing and research ability, and a commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service. Finally, preferred candidates must possess the ability to manage large, complex investigations and prosecutions.
Travel: Travel may be required both within and outside the District.
Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorneys' pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number years of professional attorney experience. The starting salary range for this position is basic pay is $50,894 to $155,400, which includes a 14.16% locality pay supplement.
Location: Positions filled may be located in either Columbia, Charleston, Florence, or Greenville South Carolina and placement will be determined at the time of selection.
