Greetings:

Okay, most of you are on your way.  The assignments are flowing in and by and large everyone is doing a great job.  You are all taking somewhat different courses; most of you are taking either police technology or computer crime; a few are taking the terrorism course; and, one is wading through the public policy course.  Now that you have had a little time.  Answer the following:

1. What is the most useful thing you have discovered thus far in your course?

2. What is different about the way we are learning in this course?  Most of you have typical on ground course experience and you are taking courses from other instructors through UI&U.  What is different about this hybrid tutorial/online module of instruction?

Recall, to fully participate you must respond to a classmate....also, feel free ask each questions, discuss issues back and forth; and, if you have any interesting law enforcement or Criminal Justice information...make a new topic!

:shock:1) The different terminologies of a computer and the many activities legal or illegal that are conducted on them.

    2) There's a lot of e-mail, terminology, and reading. at times I get confused not

understanding the terms or knowing what specific web site or course I should be

1. What is the most useful thing you have discovered thus far in your course?

As in other online course I have taken, the format and operation of the class is by far the most useful thing. My hectic work and family schedule does not allow for me to sit in a classroom three days a week, 3-4 hours a day. Also, weekly homework would be very difficult to complete at times. Having the assignment roster and plenty of time preparation allows for a less stressful experience for myself.

2. What is different about the way we are learning in this course? Most of you have typical on ground course experience and you are taking courses from other instructors through UI&U. What is different about this hybrid tutorial/online module of instruction?

Rather then purely relying on a computer and the Internet, we are able to use a textbook, which allows for more of a "college/university feel." I read and comprehend much better through a textbook versus e-books or computer texts.

I enjoy the interaction through the class postings, which are a substitute for actual group discussion. I like the fact that we are able to see where each other is employed, as it makes for a good networking group in law enforcement. I think it is amazing that we can perform every function that a regular sit-in class does, with our computer. If it were not for classes of this kind, it would be nearly possible for me to finish my degree, especially in a timely manner.

The fact I've been able to use a new avenue to learn. The postings to me are great. I enjoy the interaction with other students.

The use of the power point and text in an online course as well as weaving the dialog into the mix make for an interesting way to learn.

1. I am in the process of developing a unit that investigates a variety of computer-related crimes. This class and the Technology class have given me a good start in this process. So far we have used some of the information from the class to obtain software that has aided in investigations.

2. I have taken other on line courses from another school. They were more of a correspondence class. There was no communication with the instructors unless there was a significant problem. There was also an extended time to complete a class while this gives me deadlines. I prefere deadlines so that my work does not linger and my ideas get stale.

1.  The most useful thing I have discovered in this course thus far is the collection and transportation of electrical evidence.  In my position I deal with a lot of electrical devices that can set off an explosion.  However, I was never taught how to collect the electrical  evidence after the device had been disarmed .:?

2.  What a breath of fresh air for higher education!!!  I love  taking online courses.    It has giving me the freedom to work my regular shifts (and then some) and still find time to do my assigments.  I could have never done "school" again by working the hours I do and being on call 24-7.

Chestrina:

Hang in there.  It will get less confusing as you move forward in the course, and it will make your subsequent courses better.  Believe me, if you are getting confused you are getting a good education:)

Hi k97,

I am in total agreement with you when it comes to the flexibility and ease of online classes. Trying to struggle with a work, family, and school schedule is hard enough. Sitting in a classroom, daily homework, weekly quizzes, and all the other circumstances that come with a classroom environment is very unattractive. If I had to sit in a classroom and work, I think I could only manage one class at a time, making me around age 40 when I would graduate.

After attending the academy, FTO, ongoing dept training, AO schools, junior college classes etc, this is a breath of fresh air. I'm very happy I'm in this program.

#1- I would have to say that the most useful thing that i have discovered so far would be my computer and the internet.  I am not the most computer literate person in the world and this course on Police Tech. has got me to explore new things on my computer.  This is my first on-line course and i have become alot more familiar with how to do certain tasks on the computer.

#2-  This course to me is different as I have never had on-line discussion forums before.  i think it is a good idea as it does kind of give the course the "old" style classroom setting.

1. I have learned about additional web sites such as the Geographic Name Information System web site.  I can utilize web sites like these in emergency pre-planning or warrant services. There are so many resources out there that law enforcement can use, but if I had not taken this course I would not have known about some of them.

2. I have taken on-line class before and have participated in discussion group forums, but what I like about this class is that I have all the assignments in advance. This allows me to work ahead and complete the assignments when it is convenient to me as long as I turn in the module by the due date. The other on-line classes I have taken would only give me weekly assignments and I had to stay on the same schedule as my classmates.

I'm happy for you jvallinunion that you are now able to use your computer. By the end of this class you should have no problems with a computer. When I started taking on-line courses I did not have a clue on how to attach files to e-mail or attach pictures. I had to learn quick and I'm glad I did. I just don't see myself sitting in a class listing to lectures all day now that I have taken on-line classes.

1. The most useful thing that I have discovered thus far is a little of everything. Hell, before this course, the only "cookies" I knew about were chocolate chip. On the flip side though, it is a little frustratrating for me, due to my lack of knowledge with computers and the terminology. It has also been "years" since I have written papers. I am barely learning the different formats on "Word" to use. I am more familiar with the pen and paper method. This course has definitely motivated me to take a basic computer course in the future.

2. I love the online way of learning. I swore to myself that I would never participate in any type of formal education again. I never wanted to sit in a classroom again. Online instruction and the flexibility of the instructors allows me to take 12 units, work full time with overtime and spend time with my family. This course also forces me to look and play around with the computer. Hands on is a good way to learn.

I am taking the Terrorism course. Through this course I have a better understanding of the history of terrorism and have a different outlook then I did before.

Through on-line learning I have the freedom to work at my own pace to complete assignments. With my busy schedule this would not be possible if I had to be in a classroom on certain days of the week. Now I only have to open my laptop, and through the use of my wireless card log on and work from where ever I happen to be.

:)1.  The most useful thing I have discovered this far is that crime has taken on a new form and we need to adjust our ways of thinking to keep up with that form.  Technologhy is definitely the way of the future and it is best for all those intrested in law enforcement careers to expand their  knowledge on this subject.  I learned more in depth  that computers, cellphones, and other electronic devices are very powerful in the world of crime.  It is a scary thing to try and control because it is not something that you can immediately put your hands on in the same way that you can catch a criminal in the act of an assault.:)

:cool:2.  Summing up both questions into one; I enjoy learning through the internet versus attending classes because it is slightly more self-paced and self-motivated.  It takes a person who wants to acheive a higher goal to take courses over the computer because there is no one to put them in check but themselves.  I like how you let us know what are assignments are in a timely manner and you leave it to us to get it done.  If we need to contact you for assistance it is there for our use. Though attending classes gives you better 1 on 1 assistance, I enjoy the freedom of being able to walk away from the computer and comming back later to finish what I had started. The small difference in my opinion, between attending a course and completing one over the internet is that most internet courses seems to gives you assignments to complete than a actual attendance course. All that aside, I still prefer on-line tutorials.

Hey everybody, hope your are all well and safe. I wanted to tell you about a training class entitled "Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs". The course is an 8 hour Post block taught by ATF Agent Bill Queen. If any of you are having problems with the "MONGOL MC" in your area the training is the best I have ever attended. AGT Queen is the only agent to infiltrate and ride as a full member of the gang. He brought down several members.

We seem to be having an influx of MONGOLS in our town. Are any of you having the same? There is a book Bill wrote about his operation called "UNDER AND ALONE" a must read. If you come across any of these people  keep wired tight these are bad guys.  My best to all.

1. What is the most useful thing you have discovered thus far in your course?

The most useful thing I have discovered is there is a wealth of information out there and my job is to figure out how to access it.  Your on line program gave me all the tools to access this information.  I was able to link onto virtually any topic of interest and had other information that I had not even thought of come to the forefront.  Which lead me to new Ideas and better understandings of existing ones.

2. What is different about the way we are learning in this course?  Most of you have typical on ground course experience and you are taking courses from other instructors through UI&U.  What is different about this hybrid tutorial/online module of instruction?

What is different are many things, to start I have never taken an on line class before.  So this may sound odd but I had a rough time with this course granted in ways it’s far soupier then being on a time table with scheduled demands, out putting a weekly home work assignment such as in a class room setting.  I guess I always thought of my self as computer literate but boy did this open my eyes.  You really are put to the challenge trying to figure out if you’re on the write page.  I spent many hours on topics that were not related to my course.  I felt overwhelmed with all the information however, grateful for the experience.
