Okay, as far as personal use, police officers are restricted for puchase and ownership just like everyone else.  As much as some off-duty cops I know would like to own gernade launchers,,,well, legally thats out.

Duty weapons:

Generally, your agency regulates the types of weapons that can be carried on, and in some cases, off-duty.  So, you can own a .44 magnum, but your agency isn't going to let you carry it.  There are some good reasons.  Let's say we get in a firefight and you waste your ammo.  If we have different guns I can't give you any.  Or, if you are hurt and I need to use your firearm, I should be familiar with it.  So, we all carry the same stuff.   More and more, agencies are also regulating what you can carry off-duty.

That point comes into training.  Most police officers are probably barely proficient with their duty weapon.  So, that is the one they practice with.  You should ALWAYS practice and qualify with your duty weapon.  I know, some of the target shooters will disagree, but, for MOST cops, when the rubber meets the road they need to be thoroughly familiar with the firearm they have.

How many at one time?  I knew a guy who carried five on his person.  I think that is stupid.  I always carried my primary weapon and one back-up weapon.  And, I alternatiely qualified with each.  After they finaly gave us permission to carry semi-auto 9MM I carried the 9MM as duty and a 2-inch S/W six shot as back up.  Of course, when I started they issued me a 4 inch 38 SW and we used softnosed lead bullets.  Ek, slingshots would have been better.

Other comments?

ok , but are you aloud to choose a diffrent brand? such as instead of a Glock 17 9mm can you choose a Beretta 92 9mm?

and are LEO's aloud to use emergency lights on their own personal vehicles?

Sgt Eric:

If an agency designates you have to have a certain brand, then that is it.  LAPD says Berretta (unless you work SWAT), so that's it.  Some agencies give you the choice.  Just depends...and, there are over 17,000 state and local agencies, yes that's right over 17,000...every city, county, campus police, railroad police, state police, has their own way.   Now, some smaller agencies have police officers use their personal vehicles...indeed, I think that it was that way in Hawaii for a long time. So, if the car is being used for official use..then yes, but it would be a very small agency.

Generally, I would say no.  Most vehicle codes prohibit the installation of lights, sirens and certain types of horns on your personal vehicle.

Any other opinions?

Our Dept Policy has been revised to allow only semiautos from 4 companies ... Sig, Glock, S & W and Baretta. only in either 9mm or 45 .

Our long guns are either AR15 with set equipment i.e. no scopes, not full auto, except swat and only one type of tactical sling. barrel length is listed too, or we can chose to carry the Ruger Ranch Mini 14. Obviously both are .223.

And we are only authorized to carry the Remington 870 shot gun.

This is primarily, I bieve becaus while we supply the guns, training supplies the duty rounds and our budget just can't deal with the occasional .40 or .10 like some agencies.

also, we are only authorized to carry our duty weapon plus no more than one backup.

From a another officer:

We are limited on duty only. On duty, we can only carry one weapon: The Sig 226 chambered in .40 caliber. We can carry BUG's, but we have to be qualified with them. As a BUG, I carry a Glock 26 in 9mm. Off duty, its up to us, but we are admonished to carry a weapon we have trained on. Generally, I carry my Sig off duty (open carry), seeing as that is the weapon I train with most, so my muscle memory is programmed for that weapon. If I want to go concealed, I carry a Glock 17, which I use very often in personal practice. I have been a gun enthusiast since my time in the military, and paractice with as wide variety as I can, however, so I have more firearms experience most cops. For the average cop, I recommend something as similar to the duty weapon as possible, if not the duty weapon itself. Almost every pistol commonly used in LE has a compact version designed for concealed carry. This is the most viable option for most cops, due to the muscle memory issues I mentioned earlier

Well as you can see, there are a lot of varying answers to this question.  At my agency (which is a Federal agency) the department does not worry about what you carry.  You may carry a .40, a 9mm, a .38, or whatever you want as long as you are a certified police officer and you are authorized to carry a weapon.  You also have to qualify with the weapon you carry off duty.  I kept it simple--I carry a Sig Saur P228 (9 mm) and I also carry the same model on duty.  This eliminates potential problems and allows me to standardize my muscle movements and actions.  Be safe!

My agency allows you to carry any weapon from a reputable manufacturer.  If you want to carry a revolver...knock yourself out.  However, you aren't going to want that in a gun fight now a days.  The more rounds the better.  I carry an H&K USP 45 on duty (SWAT Team member) and an H&K USP 40 off duty.  I agree with one of your replies, carrying the same weapon on and off duty makes for the same muscle memory movement.  Our department issued weapon is the Baretta 40 cal.  However, many of our officers carry Glocks (40 and 45) and Sigs (40 and 45).  A few carry Kimbers (45 1911 style model) and some have Springfields (now thats a nice gun...the 45-1911 model).  If you wanted to carry a 44 mag, that's all good too.  But remember, thats only a six shot revolver.  It doesn't matter about the rounds being the same for us...my goodness, some guys now carry 40-50 rounds on their person...you only need one round.  Remember, never shoot faster than you can make accurate hits.  But if you've ever seen those shooting videos...seems like the more rounds you have the more you think you need to shoot.  Remember also, you are responsible for those rounds.

Out--
