I received about 50 comments re: the initial post. Thank you for all the commentary and suggestions.
First, yes oh yes, I confused my right from my left as far as weight transfer….I realized it while driving to the writers group meeting I host.
Second, A reader points out that this is NOT ramming a vehicle. It is nudging; actually a relatively minor contact.
Third, yes, there are SPECIFIC tactics and aspects of the PIT I did not post. Many of you sent me really good tips that I think we should just keep to ourselvesJ
Fourth, It is a dangerous maneuver and people have been injured. However, given the options – no chase, or chase with an uncontrolled ending, the PIT may be a viable option, under certain circumstances. Many agencies do not allow the PIT as a tactic. But, in truth, a number of major agencies do; and, have found it to be a valuable option.
Fifth, while the tactic and the science are cool – it is the judgment and the skill of the police officer behind the wheel that is critical. According to the best available research of the people killed/injured in police pursuits, 15% are innocent parties; of the remaining 85% the injuries and deaths are evenly divided between the suspect and the officer.
