The Law Enforcement Aviation Technology Program (http://www.justnet.org/aviation), a program of the National Institute of Justice, will host Aviation Demonstration Day on Thursday, June 9, at the Bay Bridge Airport near Annapolis, Md. Aviation Demonstration Day provides a hands-on look at numerous low-cost aviation technologies that could potentially meet law enforcement aviation needs.
The primary focus will be on gyroplanes as a cost-effective solution for law enforcement, particularly for small and rural agencies. While already in use in other countries, the introduction of gyroplanes for use by U.S. law enforcement is relatively new. It has been suggested that gyroplanes offer the potential to complete 90 percent of standard helicopter missions at 10 percent of the cost; several gyroplane manufacturers will be on hand to answer questions and to provide demonstration flights. Other technologies displayed will include small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS), light sport patrol aircraft and low-cost airborne camera systems.
This free demonstration will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Bay Bridge Airport, 202 Airport Road, Stevensville, MD 21666. The nearest major airport is Baltimore-Washington International (BWI), an approximate 30-minute drive.
