What are your thoughts on minimum mandatory sentencing? For example, on a state prosecuted drug case (first time offense for lets say possession for sales of a kilo of cocaine) one would probably receive a sentence of six months to a year in jail. If the case was to be prosecuted federally, that same person would be facing a minimum mandatory sentence starting at five years. Is this fair?

Tmeyer-

I'm not for minimum mandatory sentencing.  I'm for the fullest extent of the law.  It's individual like this that are out at night committing crimes to meet their next fix.  I'm for the federal guidelines for sentencing.  However, doesn't the federal side like punishing individuals by means of fines rather than doing time?

I think we need to be more harsh on sentencing.  If the person knows that there's a heavy price to be paid for their crime I feel it would make SOME think twice abou certain crimes.

I think mandatory minimums are good.  It is the only way the criminals are going to be kept off the street especially for the serious "crimes against persons."   For the criminals with drug offenses,  well anyone with law enforcement experience knows their crime escalates as they get deeper and deeper into their addiction.

Let's do everything we can to keep the standards high for the culture we leave for the next generation. If we treat all crimes with seriousness, even the samller one's, we're sending the right message to all would be crimnals. If you let people get away with "small" crimes they build up a tolerance and keeep committing crimes against property and persons and someone will be victimized because the "system did put the perpetrators in jail for the lesser crimes. We need good minimum prison sentences.
