I recently conducted a research paper on the benefits of a 12 hours shift vs. an 8 hour shift.  In many of the research aticles I located, SUPERVISORS were against the 12 hour shift because it gave the officer too many days off.  The SUPERVISORS believed that there profession of being a police officer would come second to....let's say "off duty jobs".  Those of you working a 12 hour shift...do you find yourself working more off duty jobs and putting your profession #2 or enjoying more time with your family and friends?

At the Fort Meade Police Department (DOD POLICE) in Maryland, we work on a 12 hour shift schedule and my officers (including myself) love the shift.

As a Police Sergeant and currently "Detailed" Lieutenant, I can tell you that having the time off does allow for working part time jobs and it also allows for more time with my family.  At the FMPD, we have a long week and a short week during two week cycle.  On the short week, I work 2 days and on the long week, I work 5 days.  Basically, I work 6 months out of the year and make a decent salary for it!  The 12 hour shifts allow me to have time to do things during the week that may need to be done and also allows me to have a three day weekend every other week.  How do you go wrong with that?  Yes, the hours you do work may be long and the three day weekend that you work is definitely a drain but the flip side is you have a three day weekend off the following weekend.

As for working a part time job, I do work a part time and I don't feel as though it interferes with my full time police position at all.  I work a part time security job and I work the days I want--not days that are set or required.  Not all companies may want that or allow that type of flexibility but the bottom line is the FULL TIME POLICE DEPARTMENT MUST take precedence and your part time employers have to know it and understand it!  If a company wants you bad enough, they will bend or be flexible and accommodate your schedule.  If not, well...that company may not be the right fit for you!

Hope this helps.

Be safe,

Lt. Brian Kunkel

12 hour shifts make it more convienent to "go back to school" and still have a day off or two.

Our patrol also works 12 hour shifts and it is very popular due to only working 15 days per month (average).  I do know that there has been studies that has shown the number of officer related accidents with their weapons and vehicles frequency goes up the last four hours of their shifts and even more the last two hours.  This also increases greatly when the 12 hour shifts are stacked three deep.

12 hour shifts are a huge reason why i'm able to continue to work on my degree.  I only work 14 days a month and that gives me the necessary time to finish college.  I also have 2 young children at home so my plate is definitely full.  The 12 hour work schedule has been a real blessing in my life.

For those working the 12 hour shift (at 3 days a week)...How does the officer make up for the remaining 4 hours per week (to get to the 40 hour work week)?

Our department is (or more like was) looking at making the officer work an 8 hour shift every other week (Training).

I think it sucks to have to come the extra day every other week.  Might as well just go back to working my 4-10 (4 days a week, 10 hours a day) and have a normal weekly schedule.

I am new to the department, and i have yet to work a 12 hour shift schedule. A few months prior to being hired on, the location that I am working at right now was on this 3-12 schedule. When talking with other peers, so far I have not heard anyone tell me that they are happy that we are now on 5 eights.

Now being on the department for a little over half a year working the jails, I think it would be nice if the schedule would be changed at least to 4 tens. It is some what of a mediator. The majority of the staff already do trades in order to have a 3 day weekend. By working 4 tens, this would eliminate having to work a long shift of 16 hours once a week.

I think most Departments right now are on a budget freeze.

I think 12 hour shifts are the way to go.  You are there longer than 8 hours most of the time anyway either working reports or getting ready for shift.  Whats wrong with spending more time with family, getting a part timer, or just hanging with friends.  Our department is currently switching to 12's in most offices, but the hang up right now are the old timers used to working eights and their inflexibility of having to go to rotation rather than sonority.

I have worked everything from split shifts to the current 3/12's. The 3/12 is the way to go. As already stated even on a 5/8 your day was much longer than that. So if your gonna have some long days why not just limit it to three instead of twelve. The 3/12 is great for family, vacations, OT, and school. Yeah, there's the potential to spend a lot on your days off, but that's a headache I'm willing to deal with. It just nice to know that every weekend is four days and take one day of vac and you can but together a nice little trip.

I have 3/12's and 4/10's since being on the department and I worked a normal 5/8 job for 13 years prior to coming onto the department. When I was working 3/12's it seemed like I hardly ever worked, both my family and personal life were better. The days were long especially when an hour drive back and forth to work is included. However I now work 4/10's and it usually becomes 4/12's before I leave. I personally would not be able to deal with the stress of the drive and the long days that would be sure to come if I were working a 5/8. 8 hours is such a short time almost any arrest made after the first couple of hours on the shift would result in overtime. I guess I amy be spoiled as well but working 5 days a week is simply too much!

Re: post 6

IN our deparment we work 13 days every deployment period.  A deployment period is 4 weeks.  The extra day's work almost makes up for those four hours lost ever week.

I am a PD officer in Texas.  I am currently working 8 hour shifts (yep, it sucks).  I use to be a cop in Cali working 12's.  12's are way better and am dying to get back on them.  Right now I am working on a proposal to for my PD to switch to 12's.  Can anyone help me with this????  My command wants to see letter's of recommadation for 12's.   Not just from officers, but from supervisors and command officers as well.  PLEASE HELP!.

If you are willing to help, email me a letter of recommendation to me at steven.petrick@utsa.edu.  if you can include how much it has benefited your agency, how it benefits the officer, and family members.  thank you

Contact the Los Angeles Police Protective League:

1308 West Eighth Street
Los Angeles, California 90017
phone: (213) 251-4554
fax: (213) 251-4566

It is the LAPD Union, they did a huge study on this which ultimately convinced the department, they will have a lot of hard facts for your agency. Good luck
