cralphunion,

I agree with your insight on employee's of government agencies. We are held to a higher standard and we should strive to that standard all times. Unfortunately, in government service we are remembered more for what we do wrong than what we do right.

I was involved in the military/government service for 9 years. I think that there is and always will be a conflict when it applies to honesty and integrity, in respect to government contract jobs. I agree there is a quality assurance problem when there is two known parties relating in government contracts. It has happens more times than I have seen in the media and first hand. There are so many jobs and government contracts that are available that the government's  liaison between the contacts always seem to manage to find run into a "Conflict on interest". I also found that there have been outside sources that have came in with no prior knowledge of the government's liaison and built a relationship from within, in respect to contracts. Money and corruption is the bottom line issue when it comes down to mixing business with pleasure or just business with under handed business.

I think that Citizenship encompasses all the values as a whole. To qualify as true citizen you should be doing all the things that are necessary to be a citizen such as integrity, respect, and responsibility.

Art,

I agree that a leader needs to have a good ethical foundation, which others can follow. Expanding upon that foundation strengthens a leader's decision making abilities, ultimately guiding an organization to success.

1. Conflict of interest in government service  has and will always be a problem in our society. This type of behavior causes corruption and can essentially pose a threat to society. As government officials you are a held at a higher standard and trusted with sensitive information. Violating integrity for your own gain, will always lead to destruction and devastion.

2. I believe that  ethical character traits are most useful to a leader. It is vital to have an employee who is committed to the good of society and who has strong ethical and integrity traits. As a leader it would be in your best interest to do the right thing, at all times, because your behavior, good or bad, will reflect in your subordinates.

I agree with you when you stated, having integrity is an important trait of  our government. As a society we expect the best out of our government and we expect them to act in our best interests at all times.

I agree with the other posts, allowing conflicts to steer your decision making or a reckles application of values causes damage at many levels. As leaders, adherence to regulations and ethical character traits is not enough. We must promote and advance their importance.

Ray, is it better to limit your opinions or learn to respect the opinions of others?  I believe if we do the latter, we increase the capacity of our values and foster a positive enviornment to expand those values we hold dear.

Derek, although I value your imput, I have to say it was thoughtful of you to be so prompt in your reply.  I just thought I would offer that up for your consideration and buffet.  Good stuff!

Conflicts of interest are very serious and probably one of the most damaging ethical problems that governmental agencies face.  At the heart of any conflict of interest problem is the that the public loses trust in the government agency.  When a government official uses their possession of authority to obtain personal gain does great damage to to all government service.  whether its fair or not we are  sometimes all judged for the actions of others.

A general overview of ethical character traits are very important as building the foundation for ethical decision making. However, having a particular  statement or rule in regards to conflicts of interest can be just as important.  Having a statement conveys one clear message to the whole organization, while the ethical overview aids in providing a basis for all decision making.

Max D Arcadia wrote: It seems that some type of corruption is in the news everyday.  Conflict of interest is just another type of situation that the general public hates to hear about, especially as it pertains to government workers (ie law enforcement).  We are definitely expected to do the right thing.  I think the public understands when we make honest mistakes, then own up to them.  What gets us in trouble are the stupid mistakes, lies, and scandals.  The public hates that.  How many times can we apologize?  If we are the leaders of our departments, let's act like it.  Lead by example.

I agree with you Max it is the stupid mistakes, lies and scandals that get us in the most trouble.  most times its not the mistake that was made , but the cover-up to try and hide the mistake.

conflicts of interest in government can cause kaos and corruption within a goverment setting .

because the success of our government depends on maintaining the trust of the public which may question your motives on certain decisions.

an agency might "disqualify" you from an assignment that will affect a member of your household or that involves a person with whom you do business outside the Government to gain power or finances

your ethical character is most important because it involves trust  and trust of the public because being in lawenforcment or government office society holds you to a higher standard which builds a higher trust factor
