I highly enjoyed cj 385. The class was very informative both by subject matter and by also by having a former police officer helped make the subject more relatable. I enjoyed learning about topics that can be controversial, and hearing the different opinions of my classmates. I think the course will be beneficial to me in my day to day life, my current job, as well as my future career in law enforcement. The worst part of the class (which i have to agree with my classmates) was the Shusta book. It was sometimes to get the true meaning of what shusta was trying to express. On the other hand, the Joseph book was easy to navigate and understand the main ideas. I would have liked to hear more of Foster's experience on duty as an officer during the duration of the course.

i agree with frodriquezcj38507 that Mrs. Foster was a very excellent speaker to have. She was very knowledgable about domestic violence. I also agree with my classmates that the shusta book was dry and made doing the papers alittle harder

I can honestly say that I thouroughly enjoyed this class. The lectures were very informative and allowed for me to think abstracly. I learned alot about why and how minorities are over-represented in the criminal justice system. I also found it interesting how our society lives through path dependence and how segregation still exists. I think I would have liked to explore how we can alleviate the over-representation of these minorities deeper. What I found least useful were the discussion questions, but overall everything else was interesting.

I would have to agree that the lecture about the advantages of the white privilege was interesting. Being half hispanic, but looking more of my white half, it's hard to realize that the white community really does have a privilege.

Minorities and crime was definitely an interesting course which covered a lot of material. One of the most interesting parts of the class was this last Thursday in which Foster drew out a chart of minorities and the criminal justice system. Really did summarize the class for me. My least favorite part of the class was the Shusta book but even then Foster explained why he used the book.

I agree this was an interesting class overall and the course discussions was not my favorite part of the class either. I also agree with you about exploring more about the over representation of minorities in the criminal justice system. There were subjects in throughout the class which touched on this subject like white privilege, path dependence etc.

I enjoyed taking this course because the lectures were very informative. I've known that sometimes minorities do receive different treatments and this class points out why and how (education/diversity). Mrs. Foster as a guest speaker was a nice change as well as informative. I agree with one of the students that the diagram on thursday did summarize the course.

I learned that every one is discriminated against in certain jobs opportunities.  Every one has to make a real effort in order to improve communities everywhere.  The most interesting part that I will take from this class is the guest speaker and her lecture on domestic violence.  I never thought males could be victims of it, it is just assumed that females go through it more.  However, the speaker was great and it was a great class to attend.  I would have liked to explore more the role of racism between a comminuty and the police and how that affects the system.  The useful part was learning how the system works and how it affects people within a community.

I agree with Sam, the Shusta book was not a good book.  I thought it was not helpful at times and it was sometimes hard to read, either because the chapters were too long or not to interesting at times.

Yes, it is true as much as I tried the Shusta book it was boring at times. The lectures were very interesting the time in class went by fast.

I AGREE THAT HAVING MRS. FOSTER AS A GUEST SPEAKER WAS A GREAT IDEA. SHE GAVE ME A LITTLE MORE INSIGHT ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND WHAT WE CAN DO TO PREVENT IT.

The minorites and crime class was very interesting.  What i found most beneficial was the passion the professor has regarding the topic, and adding his personal experiences throughout his career.  This helps bring into perspective what you are learning rather than trying to understand it through simply reading about it.

What could have been explored more probably in my opinion is spending more time in each topic to continually provide more in depth understanding to the various issues surrounding minorites and their relations to crime.  Then again, you only have a short timeframe to work with...

CJ385 OPENED MY EYES TO DIFFERENT TOPICS THAT I REALLY NEVER THOUGHT OF BEFORE. I ALWAYS NEW WHAT AFFIRMATIVE ACTION WAS, BUT I NEVER 100 PERCENT UNDERSTOOD THE PROCESS OF IT. I ENJOYED MR. FOSTER FREELY LETTING US EXPRESS OUR OPINIONS IN CLASS. ALTHOUGH SOMETIMES I WOULD GET A LITTLE ANGRY AT OTHER'S OPINIONS, I ENJOYED LISTENING TO THEM. THE SHUSTA BOOK WAS VERY BORING, BUT LUCKILY MR. FOSTER WOULD EXPLAIN THE TOPICS MORE THROUGHLY AND CLEARLY.

i agree having a former officer as a professor provides a better understanding to the topic in question.  it brings learning to a more realistic approach as oppose to just reading about it.

I learned between the struggles that both minorities and law enforcement have to deal with. The most interesting part of the course was the notion of path dependence. I would have liked to go more in depth on certain minority groups and there struggles with law enforcement and vice versa. The least useful part were all the websites that curtain hate groups had. Don’t get me wrong there very interesting but there were a little too much.

I enjoyed minorities and crime, particularly the debates within the class.  The one thing I would have liked better though is if the class was more evenly split on political positions.  On many topics it was the entire class versus one or two people.  Other than that it was a fairly good, thought provoking class.  I did feel that the book could have been better though.

I definately agree with dmoretti that the conversations could have been more evenly split, it did seem like it was the entire class against a one or two people, namely myself.
