Hi Beth, I am for one, glad that you were able to express your opinions in class.  A lot of us often have opinions but are afraid to express them, or just don't want to.  It's nice to have someone who is not afraid to say what is on his/her mind.  Opinions are good.  It's funny how the majority of us enjoyed Mrs. Foster as guest speaker about domestic violence and at the same time, most of us did not care for the Shusta book. But I have to say Professor Foster kinda made up for it through the lectures and sense of humor.

I am taking the Technology and Terrorism classes this session.  Both classes were informative and interesting.  It was amazing to see there are so many different web sites filled with information about all aspects of law enforcement.  These web sites will be very useful in the field.  It was interesting to me to find out that there is no one definition of terrorism.  I could not believe the governments of the world can not figure it out.  My least favorite part of the classes was talking about the basics of how computers work or how radio waves work.  I am not a tech guy.  I like to use technology and I just want it to work.  I think I would like to find out more about technology that will help officers out in the field and to make the job easier when it comes to getting peoples info and photos.

I think you touch on a good point.  After having a few years of experience under my belt in this field and then going back to school, it is nice to actually have an instructor who has been out in the work force and can teach you the way it is out in the rreal world.  Some instructors do not have that experience and try to teach you the way they think it should be based on their sheltered views.  I think I would have a hard time from here on out if I had a teacher who tried to teach me something who had little to no experience in the real world.

I believe you are on the right track when you say that you would like to further explore the implementation of this new technology out in the field, then view it through a managers perspective.  I only wish that I had taken a course in technology earlier on in my career.

Minorities and Crime was not what I expected.  I expected this class to be a dry course and it turned out to be the complete opposite. Mr. Foster made the course very fun to learn.  Through out this course I learned a lot of information that will help me with my future goals.  A few topics I have learned more about are stereotypes, diversity in law enforcement, victimization, sexual aggression, victimization, and hate crime. Each topic I have learned soo much about from the perception of sexual aggression from a man compared to a woman to how the vicious cycle of domestic violence starts and repeats the same cycle over and over.  The most interesting part of the course was when he had his daughter come in because she was on probation. I enjoyed hearing the stories. Another interesting part of class was when Mrs. Foster came in and explored domestic violence.  I have always enjoyed guest speakers.  I would have liked to explore deeper the different ethnicities and exactly the pros and cons on them.  For example how Asians are with violence and so on.  The least useful part... hhmmm I am not really sure. The course was great.

I definitely agree this course was very entertaining and Mr. Foster made the learning a fun experience.  Congratulations on this being your last semester by the way. I am almost there too!  Absolutely the information given in this class will be a great tool in our career objectives. Glad we made it through this semester! Good luck!

To:  lharper....glad to hear you enjoyed the technology aspect of the course and are finding it useful at work.  Not sure what tech gadgets you have at your place, but we just picked up our new "Blue Check" portable fingerprint device.  Makes identifying those untruthful folks we contact so much eaiser.

I learned so much. I didnt realize how much stuff influences the way we think about others. The lectures were very well thought out. I learned more from class lectures than i have in any other class lecture. The papers were thought provocing. I dont think Ive had to think out of the box for awhile now with any of my other classes. The guest lecturer, Mrs. Foster, was very informative and helped bring out things Ive never thought of before. The Izabella stories fit just perfect too.  The one thing i didnt think was necessary for the class was the need for two bboks. Must of the lecture and everything else was referenced out of the Shusta book. Over all great class. I learned a lot. Thank you Mr. Foster

I have learned so much is this class. I was always afraid to speak up in class because I did not want to ever hurt anyone feelings. From taking this class Im more responsive to sharing my actual thought and comments on many sensitive issues. Taking this class made me realize that just because laws exist, it does not mean that its interpreted literally by everyone else. The most interesting part of the course would be the whole hate crime presentation, including all the different hate websites that are actually out there. I would have loved to go over in more detail about the current issues and trends that are involved with hate crimes. Nothing was useful in this class.

Mrs. Foster lecture I thought was also very interesting. I learned so much and was actually able to compare it to individuals that I know. This was a very interesting class.

To be honest I learned that this website posting board was more of a hinderance than it was a help. I received personal emails regarding posts that didn"t even concern the current class which made it very confusing. I don't even know if my posts were posted in the right areas.

As far as the class itself, I learned a great deal in regards to cross cultural communication which I am sure will definitely help me in the future based on my employment with the school district. I really got to understand about mixed messages in regards to body language and eye contact and what I thought was disprespectful was actually just the opposite based upon cultural backgrounds. This has helped me to adapt and be more understanding when dealing with students with varying cultural backgrounds.

I also thought the path dependence part of the African American culture was very enlightening.

This class was not exactly what I expected either and I did find the Shusta book a bit dry. However the lectures I agree were entertaining and informative. Best of luck in your future endeavors.

I would have liked to explore more on the different terrorist organizations in the terrorism course.  A deper understanding of some of the larger groups may help in understanding the acts of terrorism as a whole.

I thoroughly enjoyed having the courses set up the way that they are.  Sure, it is a ton of work to do in a short time, but with a busy life, it makes the time go quicker.  i have a greater appreciation for time management and organization than I had before.

You are right.  Taking the technology in the field is different than exploring it at a manager level.  I have a tough time holding myself back after a sales pitch for some new product to bring to my agency.  i then remember all of the people this might affect and it brings me back to earth.

I enjoyed taking minorities and crime and I found the lectures and the instructor to be very informative.  I specifically enjoyed the lectures on sexual harassment, terrorism, and hate crimes.  Further, I found the guest lecture on domestic violence to be very informative and it provided me with great reference material.

With out you Beth class would have never been fair and balanced!  So, I thank you.  Your participation inspired me to show up to class every day.  I guess it's a good thing your BFF never (brought it) considering his new occupation... awesome bro! But at least you made some new friends and you even found out what you spiritual and political status is in the process.  Maybe next semester someone can fill me in on what my status is =/

I enjoyed this course on technology.  The course was an eye opener of sorts and allowed me to see another side of law enforcement.  While my time in this class went by quickly, I am not done learning about this aspect of L.E.  I thought the exposure to the different websites that are available to L.E was helpful

I think the most interesting thing we discussed was the context in which officers communicate with the public and how their low context style can potentially be harmful to the communication effectiveness.  It seems that police are typically just looking for a direct style of communication where questions are answered definitively.  The majority of the minority public, however, communicates using a variety nonverbal styles.
