Being a rookie cop (just over 2 years) I hadn't taken any time to explore aspects of law enforcement from the perspective of a supervisor.  Knowing I plan plan to promote, it was a good exercise to gear myself toward this.

However, I've also been challenged with ideas to utilize on patrol.  The primary thing I took to use on a daily basis is the use of technology.  I work at a department with a fair amount of technology available to us.  I, like most other patrol officers, haven't tapped into the technology.  Since this course, I've been working on ways to use technology to make myself more efficient and effective on patrol.

With that, I would like to spend more time exploring both of these, supervisorial aspects of technology and uses of technology to enhance patrol performance.

Being that I've worked patrol for 8 yrs, I found that CSC 392 really helped me with fraud investigations and identity thefts. I believe that was the most interesting topic studied for the duration of this course. Further, I know this class is a great benefit to anyone who is interested in computer crimes and investigations. At no time did I believe there was any least useful part during this instruction.

I agree with taking advantage of technological resources. It is imperative as law enforcement officers to stay in touch with advances that may very well assist us in completing our job.

I enjoyed taking Minorities and the Criminal Justice System.  What I have learned is the different meanings of minorities.  The class not only focused on minorities, it focuses on other subjects such as hate crimes, sexual harassment, slavery, community policing, terrorism, women's and men's issues, and last but not least, domestic violence.  The guest speaker on domestic violence was very informative.  She was very passionate about this subject.  Anyhow, I wish the professor had assigned different books.  I thought Shusta's book was hard reading which made the writing assignments a little difficult.  This is the only thing I like least about the class.  Anyway, I believe that any subject you take in school will help you in your path to excellence.  An education is something that you will have for the rest of your life.

The Technology course proved to be challenging and informative. The text book reading and presentations were useful in gaining an understanding of the subject matter. Going to the various websites that the book references was interesting.  Such a wealth of resources that are available on line for law enforcement personnel.

An interesting aspect of the course was researching future technology and it's impact on law enforcement.

Hi Sam, I agree with you that the Shusta book was very hard to read and extremely bland, which did make the papers more difficult. I also enjoyed taking this class, it was very informative and eye opening.  Good luck to you, we only have 2 more weeks!!!

I enjoyed this class very much and will take a great deal of it with me in what ever career I choose. When I registered for this class I thought I would learn just about minority groups and their place in society. This was not the case, I learned a lot about racial profiling, racism, domestic violence, and of course minority groups. As mentioned before, the Shusta book had some interesting points but overall, it was very hard to read and kind of dry.

The Computer Crime course was/is challenging for me because I'm not computer saavy.  I researched topics that I previously had no interest in and actually enjoyed it.  Its frightening to realize just how vulnerable we are.  Hopefully there are qualified law enforcement officers out there that aspire to work in the Computer Crime arena.

The interesting thing about using technology as a patrol officer, is that now my employer has applied for a grant to have MDT/MDC installed in our patrol vehicles. Maybe now I can look forward to new technology (To ME) as a patrol officer.

I enjoyed taking this class because of the wealth of knowledge I learned regarding racial profiling, hate crimes, community policing, and domestic violence. The most interesting part of the course was when learning all the advantages of white priviledge. I would like to have explored deeper the benefits of diversity. The least useful part was the Shusta book, the book was difficult to read at times. I enjoyed reading the Joseph book because it was easier to understand.

I think the guest speaker on domestic violence was very interesting. I plan to take what I have learned and apply to my job. This class has taught me valuable knowledge on the various subjects relating to Minorities and Crime.

I enjoyed taking minorities in the cj system.  I learned the issues about being a minority in this country and how it applies in law enforcement.  The course explains how some law enforcement agencies sterotype minorities.  This class doesnt only focus on minorites but it also explains certain issues such as sexual harassment, and hate crimes.  What i enjoyed about this course is how we could all explain our thoughts in this forum.

I aswell agree about the Shusta book.  You really have to dedicate time to it so you have a a better chance of understanding.

Overall, I thought taking CJ385 was definitely a good course to take for my last semester here at CSUF. What I enjoyed most about this course was the fact that the professor was a former police officer. As we have experienced throughout our education from grade school, to college we all have had courses where teachers would just lecture out from the given text. Rather than just focusing on the material in the text, Professor Foster also incorporated real life examples, as well as including an open form type of atmosphere where the students in the class have the opportunity to state their voices/opinions. This indeed made not only the topics more interesting to learn about, but easier to comprehend.

Another interesting aspect that I enjoyed about the course was learning about: the different types of racism, Domestic Violence, and types of communication styles. I believe the information we have covered throughout these approximately sixteen weeks will definitely be an additional tool/resource that I can utilize in my future career.  The only least useful part I could possibly think of is the Shusta book. I think the text in itself provided a plethora of information yet in some sections was difficult to retain and understand what the author was trying to portray to the reader.

I definitely agree with jgonzalez. Not only did the course cover the title of the class which is Minorities and Crime but it also had covered additional interesting topics. The topics such as sexual harassment and hate crimes, I personally thought were vital topics to include because in any type of field sexual harassment indefinitely is very crucial to know. Being able to view and express our opinions on this online forum was also a plus because we had the opportunity to see our fellow classmates/peers/others opinions towards the variety of topics that were posted on the discussion board.

Mrs. Foster indeed was a great guest speaker to have. The information she provided definitely will be useful for not only the general population but also for future individuals interested to pursue a career in Law Enforcement. Being able to identify the stages of Domestic Violence and also understanding the circle of violence will definitely be very useful as either a police officer in responding to DV calls, and also a preventative strategy in possibly becoming a victim on Domestic Violence.

This was a very technical but interesting course.  The subject matter covered for the most part weren't things that I'm really interested in however if I ever plan to promote to the rank of commander or above in my department some of these issues will come up and it will be nice to be familiar with them.
