Hi Richard.  I wish you luck this semester as you continue to work on getting your B.A. in Criminal Justice.  I hope that everything works out for you in the future, and that you can obtain a career in law enforcement with your degree.

I am in my Senior year as a Criminal Justice major at Cal State Fullerton.  I currently work for CSUF as an Administrative Support Assistant in their Distance Education department.  I work with students that take classes entirely online or are televised courses.

I plan to get my Master's Degree in Library Science with an emphasis in Archiving and Database Management.  I am aware of larger law enforcement agencies that utilize the advantages of this type of degree when dealing with preservation of evidence, mainstreaming large amounts of information, etc.  While I am aware that those jobs are not readily available, I am also interested in working at libraries on college campuses and working within larger museums as well.

For a short time I considered going into law enforcement when I got out of the Army since I was a Military Police during my committment.  However, I decided to pursue a more academic route and have since decided that regular law enforcement is not for me.  By regular law enforcement I mean working the streets and being "in the trenches" so to speak.

I have considered working in corrections dealing with juvenile delinquents but I am not sure getting my degree in Social Work or Counseling is what I truly want to do.   No matter where my flights of fancy take me, I also go back to Library Science.

I hope to learn a lot of things from you all throughout the course of this semester.  Please feel free to reply to my posts at any time.
Have a great semester everyone!!

Hi John,
I agree that computer problems for law enforcement will continue to grow as the internet expands further along the information highway.

In my Enforcement Function class I have chosen to write my issue paper on how the internet has provided new opportunities for criminals and challenges for police.  If you have any comments on this subject, I would greatly appreciate any insight you could provide.

Good luck with your semester and finishing your degree, I know how hard it can be to juggle everything :)

I'm graduating this semester, and I'm interning at a police department for my psych internship.  I want to go on to get my PhD in Clinical Psych so I can work in the Forensic field...  There are Forensic Master's, but the programs aren't really accredited yet.  Good luck with your studies, Psych's a great major!

Emily,

I read your introduction, which had a question about the use of a Psych Degree in Law Enforcement.  There are a ton of people in Law Enforcement who use their Phych Degree / Education / Knowledge in various aspects of the profession.   Many agencies have  assignments in "Behavioral Sciences" or other units where this expertise is used. I have personal experience from by time as a Crisis Negotiator  (more commonly known as a "Hostage Negotiator" )with the use of Critical Incident Debriefings.  Many of these are done by people such as Phychologists or people with the skills and training in this area.  Some agencies employ people with this expertise as part of their response team to critical incidents.  All agencies require a pre employment Pshycolgical Evaluation, which is another area this is used.

I could go on and on about what is available, and that is with my limited knowledge in your field of study.   I would recommend contacting some of the local agencies where you live.  If you are in Orange County, start with the Sheriff's Dept., Anaheim PD, or some of the large agencies.  I know LAPD and LA Sheriff have big Psych Units and may be a resource to what would be available for you based on your education.  It sounds like you need to get info from someone in one of those units to provide you with specific info as to what will meet your goals.

Good luck.  Hopefully you won't find me laying on a couch spilling my guts to you someday!!

Hello everyone, I am finally finishing up my 26 year degree program. currently I am taking a course in terrorism. It's a great feeling knowing I'm almost there. Now that I've started back, I think I'll work on a masters degree in anti-terrorism.

Hello Everyone,

I am a Junior at Cal State Fullerton and I am interested in becoming a member of the criminal justice community.  Currently I am working for a supply company in Santa Fe Springs and trying to provide for my wife and small daughter.  I have been seperated from the Army for two years this month.  While serving, I was an Airborne Infantryman and I served a year overseas in Iraq and Kuwait.  I hope Law Enforcement is as rewarding personally as the military was.

Hi Catrina,

I was just curious.  I too was in the military.  I was in the Army for a few years, and served the majority of the time at Ft. Bragg in North Carolina.  Where did you serve?  Also, how did you like it as an MP?  I was always curious if that might have been something I might be interested in.

Thanks,

Shane

Hi Shane,

I did my OSUT at Ft. McClellan in Alabama before they moved the school to Ft. Leonard-Wood in Missouri.  I was in the Army from 1994 to 1997.  After basic I was stationed at Ft. Polk in Louisiana with the 204th MP Co.

I got to deploy to Haiti twice and Bosnia once before I ended my enlistment.  Those experiences changed my life dramatically and how I look at things.  There are so many other people out there that need help, it is just a shame that they all cannot receive it.  I also got to go to Alaska and Germany while I was married to my ex.

As for how I liked being an MP.....I LOVED IT!!!!!
I could not have asked for a better job while I was in the Army.  Not only do you live sort of a "double life" but you get to know the ins-and-outs of the post pretty well.  By "double life" I mean one day you can be a field grunt, and the next you can be all polished up doing security for a General or the President of the US when they visit your post.  (I got to do both)

I loved being in the Army and I loved being an MP even more.  There is a story as to why I did not stay in and do my 20, and of course it involves my ex.  There are a lot of Infantry and Cav guys that made the move over to the MP branch because of how versatile it can be.  One minute you are patrolling around post in a sedan and the next you are out in the field, and playing in the dirt.  I loved the variety and there was plenty to learn too.

Hope this is not too much information, but I tend to elaborate :D
Feel free to ask me about anything else.  Good luck with your studies but don't forget about the wife and daughter too ;)

Hi Mary!  Glad to hear that you love to eat IN-N-OUT, the burgers are very delicious.  I think that you will like Cj.310A, I took that class last semester and it was my favorite class.  I took it with Mr. Anderson, and I learned a lot about criminal law and how to go about difficult situations based on the laws and crimes we covered through the semester.  I think that you will be able to use a lot of information from that class in the future, especially if you are interested in dealing with a lot of white collar crimes.  Good luck this semester, and I wish you the best in finding a good job after you graduate. ;)

Hello everyone.  My name is Lee Hickam.  I am currently a 5th year senior at California State University Fullerton.  I am a Criminal Justice major with a minor in Political Science.  I am currently taking The Enforcement Function and Search, Seizure and Interrogation, and a couple of other "unit filler" courses so that I can graduate at the end of the Spring semester.

I had never taken a night course before and had hoped to meet some people that are already in the field or have experience.  I am currently unemployed and a full time student.  I am undecided as to what I will do with my degree.  I am very interested in finding internships and volunteering in the Orange County area.

P.S:  I had posted a seperate topic for my introduction and then I saw this... whoops :D

Hi Mary,

May I ask who you are taking Search, Seizure, and Interrogation with?  And when?  I am also taking that course.  I have it on TR at 5:30 with Max Dery.  If you have him and havent before, DONT BE SCARED OFF!  heh.  Yeah, I had 310A with him and it was great.  The class can be challenging at times but you will learn a ton.  If we do indeed have the same course, then it would great if we could use eachother as contacts in case we need help.

Hi Emily,

I am just the opposite of you.  I am majoring in CJ and thinking of minoring in Psyc.  So you want to be a criminal profiler, well, I want to be a coroner.  Maybe someday our paths will cross in the field.

Hey Lee,

I do believe that we have Dery together for his 5:30pm class. As a matter of fact, didn't we have Corrections class with Koo last semester? I think we did, if not then sorry for the mix up. But yea... that class... anywho I do have Mr. Dery for 310A and Search and Seizure... I gotta say that he is one crazy professor, but he keeps the class entertained. So far both his class is pretty good, except for a few headaches:shock:  after them. I've learned to sit towards the back of class...:D

Oh and yeah, being contacts is fine with me. My email is marysongco53@csu.fullerton.edu and my # is 3105081475. I know this semester for me will be intense and I'm pretty certain that my brain will get overloaded. But I figure you gotta do whatever needs to be done to get closer to graduating. Hope you have a great semester as well and I'll see you in class...

P.S. if anyone else wants to be a contact with me for Foster's class then let me know and list your email or # people...:P

Hi everyone,

My name is Terry.  I am now retired and living in the Philippines.  I have decided to pursue a course in criminal justice and I want to help track down cyber crime.  Especially these predators that are infecting our children.  I lived in Atlanta Ga for over twenty years where I worked in the electronic security businees installing and servicing alarm systems in homes and businesses.  I am looking forward to learning about criminal justice.
