Hello everyone!  My name is Andrew Vestey and I am attending Cal State Fullerton.  I am enrolled in "The Enforcement Function."  I have been a police officer for the past seven years at an agency out in the I.E.  I love my job and couldn't think of doing anything else. I am attending school so that one day I can promote.

I plan to get my Master's Degree in Library Science with an emphasis in Archiving and Database Management.  I am aware of larger law enforcement agencies that utilize the advantages of this type of degree when dealing with preservation of evidence, mainstreaming large amounts of information, etc.  While I am aware that those jobs are not readily available, I am also interested in working at libraries on college campuses and working within larger museums as well.

For a short time I considered going into law enforcement when I got out of the Army since I was a Military Police during my committment.  However, I decided to pursue a more academic route and have since decided that regular law enforcement is not for me.  By regular law enforcement I mean working the streets and being "in the trenches" so to speak.

I have considered working in corrections dealing with juvenile delinquents but I am not sure getting my degree in Social Work or Counseling is what I truly want to do.   No matter where my flights of fancy take me, I also go back to Library Science.

I hope to learn a lot of things from you all throughout the course of this semester.  Please feel free to reply to my posts at any time.
Have a great semester everyone!!

Hello, hopefully this response is placed in the correct forum this time. I was a little confused the first time I posted. In reading your post I found the distance learning a topic of interest even-though posting on the correct forum proved difficult. I have taken a few distance learning classes and find them as an easier avenue for student participation. This form of communication enables students to express thoughts in less of a threatening environment.

Now, I think I understand how "quote" and "reply" work.  All tips are correctly using the forum are welcomed.

I agree that Distance Education courses can be a viable alternative for individuals that have a lot of family and work commitments and may see traditional classes as more of a burden than a reward.  However, as someone who has taken both types of courses, I prefer the traditional classes.  There is something to be said about the interaction you get from the instructor and the other students in class when going over certain topics or debating social issues.  I do not think you get the same response or more indepth online in discussion boards or chats.  It is hard to see if people are provoked or really listening to what you have to say because all they are doing is reading words on a screen.  I think if online courses were more advanced to allow for video chats by webcam so you could see facial expressions when having a group discussion it would be a lot more beneficial to the students and the instructor.

Glad you are figuring out the forum shortcuts, it does take some getting used to.
Enjoy the semester and I will see you in class tonight! :D

Hey Stevie,

We must have the same degree plan.  I graduated High School in 1981, probably before most of our student peers were born.  I have been banging away at a degree, taking a class here and a class there for the past 25 years.  Hopefully it will all end soon with a sheepskin, some knowledge, and the ability to advance in our careers!!.

Hey!  My name is Randi McNulty and this is my fourth year at Cal State Fullerton.    I work at a Clothing Boutique in Irvine called Rachael Boutique where I am the Manager and Buyer for the store.  I love my job but I also know that its not what i want to do for the rest of life.  I dont know exactly what I want to do in criminal justice but I am thinking either social work or a criminal physcologist.  Either way I am probably going to go back to school to get my Masters.

Sorina,

It really depends on your overall goals. It can also depends if you are in it for the career or for the money.    As far as exactly what you would need to qualify for something in a behavioral science field, that would depend on exactly what it is you are doing and the specific qualifications and requirements for the position.   IE: some positions specfically state "Bachelors Degree in xxx or yyy"  and some may list "Bachelors Degree in xxx or related field"   It all depends on the agency.

If you are looking to get into a law enforcement position as a sworn department member (municiple policing, highway patrol, county sheriff)  a bachelors degree in any course of study is an asset.  As far as being a "Hostage Negotiator", that is an ancillary assignment for my agency and that holds true for many departments.  For example, I was a Sergeant in the Gang Unit as my everyday job.  When we had a SWAT call-out, I switched hats and was a Hostage Negotiator.

Some agencies employ civilian personnel who are trained in Critical Incident Management or are "Police Psychologists", etc.  Some of these agencies have these people respond to the critical incidents (like hostage situations, SWAT call-outs, etc)  to provide pshcological support to the overall operation, individual personnel, and/ or those effected by the circumstances (Victims etc).  There are also positions called Victim Advocate at many Police and District Attorney's offices.

There is a ton of stuff out there.  One just needs to narrow their focus on exactly what they want, then start the search with the agencies.  I recommend starting with big departments as they usually have more diversity.  Talk to people who do pre-hire psych tests or work in those phych units.  Pick their brains for ideas on what you can do based on your goals ( career, benefits, and pay all being considered), your education, and what is available.    If you want to be a street cop and work your way up in an agency, try http://www.simivalley.org  .  We are always hiring and we pay 5% on top of the regular salary for a bachelors degree.

Good Luck.

JM

Joseph: I think we should all start a club. It has taken me almost 10 years to complete my two degrees. My family can't believe I'm actually graduating. My school days are still far from over though...I have three more years of law school to tackle before I am finished.

Hi Christian,

My name is Evan.  I am a senior at CSUF.  It sounds like that computer crimes class is interesting.  If you find out how that directly relates to law enforcement post it as a thread on the discussion board.  Good luck with all of your classes.

Evan

That's interesting. I am curious as to how you obtained your job at the Court house. Did you have to go through Civil Sevice testing and so on??? Just curious. I have a friend who is iinterested in applying.
