Hello.

My name is Veronica and this is my first session in union.  I work for the L.A. County Probation Dept. in the Juvenile Hall Systems.   I have seven years in this Department and looking for to promote in the Department after I complete my B.A. in CJ and thinking of teaching.  I am currently taking Ethics in CJ and violence/ Terrorism.  I would like to get a better understanding of terrorists.

Okay, I'm not very computer savvy.  I don't even know if I'm in the right thread.  It looks as though this thread has been neglected for awhile, however, this is where the link brought me.  This is my second session with Union Institute.  I'm looking forward to it.  It looks like I'm one of the newer officer's taking this course.  I'm coming up on my two year mark.  I'm 30-something units away from graduating.  I can't wait to be done.  Hey, if anybody happens to read this, and I'm posting in the wrong place, please let me know.  Thanks.

LONNY,

I'm not computer savy either.  I'm still trying to find my way around this site.  This is my first semester at union and I am enjoying it alot.  I need about 39 units to finish and I can hardly wait.  Our department has 3% @ 50 so I only have eight years left.  But I think 50 is too young to retire so I decided to finish school.  Good luck to you, Mike

Mike, education wise, we are in the same boat.  My guess is that we will share some more classes in the future.  Are you taking a full time load?  I'm sticking with part time for now.

Lonny,  I have 9 units now and I was able to obtain 4 more through cerified learning.  So I guess you could say I am taking 13 units this semester.  Police Supervision is the other class I am taking now.    Mike

Greetings fellow learners.  This is my umpteenth session at Union, 3rd session in 2007 and I see light at the end of the tunnel.  Hope it is not a train.  Most recently completed Terrorism, Supervision, Ethics, and Administration.  Currently enrolled in Computer Crimes & Current Issues in Law Enforcement.

Some of you spoke about not being computer savvy...  I still excel using a Ticonderoga  #2, yellow with a nice pink rubber tip and a metallic center... This Computer Crime class will be a challenge for me.

I am a Lieutenant with a mid-size Ventura County agency that wears blue and borders the City of Angels. For those of you looking for a job, we are always hiring. http://www.simivalley.org

When I complete my bachelors degree, I will throw my hat in the ring for an upcoming Captain Position.  I may also pursue additional education at CSU Long Beach for a Masters.

JM

Hi everyone,

I have been in law enforcement for a little over 10 yrs.  I started in the city of L.A. and now work as a Deputy in Riverside.  I'm in the BA program right now and hope to get my degree soon.  I'm getting too, old to chase the bad guys and need to move up the ladder.

Hello everyone! My name is Misty Premo. I am a senior at CSUF, currently enrolled in CJ 315. This May I will be graduating with a degree in Criminal Justice and one in Journalism. After graduation I will begin studying for the LSAT and then off to law school. When I am not in class I am bartending four days a week.

Best of luck to everyone this semester!:)

Misty,

I think it's funny to get a degree in Criminal Justice and on in Journalism.  That's like the opposite end of the spectrum.  Go onto the Officer.com web site and read the thread about why cops don't like the media.

Hello everyone,

I'm in my first semester at Union institute, so i'll be around for a while and look forward to getting to know you all.  I'm currently taking two classes: computer crimes and English 102.  I've been a Police Officer for a little less than a year now.  I work for the Los Angeles Port Police and absolutely love it.  If I would have known I would enjoy law enforcement this much, I would have done it years ago.  Getting my degree has been a life long goal and I look forward to achieving it.  I know it may be hard at times, juggling work, school and my family but I'm excited about it.  I enjoy telling my wife that she's married to a 33 year old freshman...SWEET!

Good Luck to you all,

JK

gberry,

Like you, I too double posted, except I was in the wrong forum.  Hey bro, that's awesome that you're knocking out your degree.  I look forward to learning from you seasoned veterans.

So where about in L.A. did you start your career and are you happier in Riverside?  I've noticed many Officer's have changed departments.

Jkeen,

I started out with the LASPD.  I worked there for 10 years.  I worked just about every assignment they had except SRT and K9.  My last 4 yrs were on a motor.  At one time or another, I have worked every area from the San Fernando Valley to San Pedro and the Ocean to Atlantic Blvd (with a few exceptions from the small beach cities).

It was a great job with a pretty good department.  I transferred to RSO in 12/07.  So far I couldn't be happier.  My only complaint is the paperwork.  I used to complain about all the paperwork LA would make us do.  The Riverside departments have at least 5 X's the paper.

I look at it as a trade off though.  On one hand, I had little paper and little admin support.  Now I have a lot of paper and an admin that would walk through the gates of hell to support me.  Not a bad trade off.

I'm still on probation and looking at getting back on a motor soon.  That's something you can't beat.

Are you working yet?  If so, where?

Greg

Hello my name is Ed Kostiuk and I am currently serving as the Emergency Manager for the Oklahoma Dept of Health here in Oklahoma. My background includes L/E and F/F as well as having retired from the Marine Corps. I look forward to serving you as well as answering any of your questions. During the late 1980's I co-taught a college level course on Terrorism in Southern California. At that time we were very concerned about eco-terrorism and narco-terrorism. As we all are aware it has evolved over the years but terrorism is terrorism be it domestic or international terrorism. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have.... I have over 30 years of database information on terrorist activities.

I have written several articles on responding to current disasters and am currently serving as a Captain, Safety Officer, with Oklahoma Task Force 1.
