Hello, my name is David and I work for a police department in the Southeast Los Angeles area.  I have been a police officer for about 4 years. I am currently assigned to patrol. I enrolled at the Union Institute in order to achieve my BS degree.

Hello.  My name is Nora and I am a Deputy for the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.  The County of Ventura is just north of Los Angeles.  I am in my fourth and last session with Union to obtain my Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice.  I initially enrolled with Union for promotional purposes, but after attending classes and reading the books I have gained a lot of respect in the program and its professors.  I now have a very different perspective  towards our supervisors and their ability (or inability) to lead.  I am looking forward to finishing my degree in December and start preparing for the upcoming Senior Deputy's test at the beginning of the new year.  I have been a Deputy for eight years and have done most of my time on patrol.  I love patrol but there are plenty of other positions within the department I would like to experience.  Wish me luck and energy.

Hello David.  I am glad you are thinking about obtaining your degree so soon in your career.  It is interesting how much your degree counts when it comes to promotion.  I know that it is not easy to work and go to school at the same time, but it can be done. Just look at us.  Good luck in your studies.

Hey, Nora thanks for the support. I think Union gives you the tools you need to finish a BS degree without loosing your sanity. (given our schedules) Good luck on your senior deputy exam.

Hi,

My name is Vaughn Whalen.  I am a police offier with the Arcadia Police Department.  I was hired in 1988.  During my career, I have spent time in patrol, traffic bureau and the detective bureau.  I served 2 years on our APOA as president.  I am currently taking two classes through U.I. &I. with Raymond Foster as my instructor.

Hi Nora,  I too entered the Union Bachlor's program to promote and quickly learned that there is a lot of information and knowledge that can be obtained from the professors.  When I originally started this program, I was going to stop after the Bachlor's degree.  Now that I am in the classes, I think I am going to continue in a Master's program.  It took me (ok I am going to age myself here) 20 years of being out of school to return.  The hardest part was getting my butt back into the seat.  Good luck in 2008 with the Senior Deputy test.

Hi Vaughn. We were in classes together at Arcadia P.D.  I too am interested in starting in the Master's degree program.  It took me so long to complete my B.A. that I never thought I would want to go higher! See you at our graduation.  Cheryl A.

Hi Cheryl,

I saw your note to Vaughn and recognized the name.   As you can see I am continuing on with UI and U.  Once I have this out of the way, I too will go for the Master's. Take care.

Hello everybody, my name is Marc.  I've been  a full-time officer with Oxnard PD since 96.  I'm looking forward to finally getting my BS through TUI within the next year.  I've been learning a lot from these courses.

I am a Sergeant for a law enforcement agency in the Southeast area of Los Angeles County. Working for a small agency often requires the wearing of different hats. Besides my primary assignment as the supervisor of the Gang Unit in our Investigations Section, I am also our TLO and work with our EOB staff. I am currently enrolled in my third session here with Union Institute and Unversity. Working on finishing up a degree and then moving on to the next. As my kids continue with their education, I have to set the example that a college education is important so what a better time than now.

Hello Gabriela,

My name is Charles Garcia.  I am currently working in Forensics and just want to say that this position has been very rewarding.  I have been a Deputy (L.A.S.D.) for 19 years and have worked various assignments, but I must say that this has been one of the best.  Good luck.

Charles

Hello Nora, Ventura County is a great place to live even though I don't as there do not seem to be enough options (other than a slow crowded freeway) for getting to work in the LA area on a regular basis. Want to get a good idea about leadership principles, consider the Deputy Leadership Program through LASD. We had their instructors travel to our agency to put on the training, so it may not be something out of reach because of location. You might even be able to arrange for them to come to your agency and use it in future promotional testing as part of your efforts to improve and develop the leadership potential of your agency. The Deputy Leadership Program is the shorter version of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute program offered through POST. SBSLI is only offered to sergeants, but I thought you'd like to know there are people out there trying to help us get better. Neal

Hello to all,

My name is Phil and I work for a small, (Appx 70-80 sworn) agency in the San Gabriel Valley and have been a police officer since 2002.  I have been an explorer advisor for the last three years and am currently assigned as a field training officer in patrol.  I started with the Union Institute in May 2007 and hope to complete my degree requirements at the end of April 2008.  My experience so far has been challenging yet very rewarding.

Its goin alright.  We are currently about 20%short on staffing at out dept so that really ups the workload for each individual officer.  This is a problem at many other places right now and our POA is taking big steps and making huge changes from the past to get us a competitive contract to attract new applicants and laterals.  Where do you work and any news from there??

Hello,

My name is Alan Hartkop.  I have 14 years of law enforcement experience with the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.  I'm currently a Detective with our Major Crimes unit.  I have two classes left to finish my B.A. Degree in Criminal Justice Management.  I'm currently taking Management of Criminal Justice Information Systems taught by Raymond Foster.  I'm a little behind with technology so I hope this class with broaden by knowledge in this area.  I initially decided to go back to college to increase my chances for promotion to Sergeant.  The process went well for me this year; I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I get promoted by summer.  I've really enjoyed going back to school and find Union's program an excellent way to get your degree.

Hi Nora,

I can tell you from recently going through the promotional process that our agency (Ventura County Sheriff's) feels strongly about continued education.  Good luck with your upcoming testing process.  Try to remember the principles you learned in the supervision class.  They will definitely help you in your departmental oral exam especially if you can apply them to yourself.

Alan
