All Union Institute and University Winter Semester 2008
(Includes Session I, Session II and Semester Learners)
You must make two posts to receive full credit.
While you may be in different courses, most of you are criminal justice majors and/or criminal justice professionals. Moreover, in all of the courses there is the common thread of looking at terrorism. For the students in the terrorism course it’s, well, obvious. For the criminology students the first several chapters of your text discuss terrorism as it relates to crime causation. Even those of you in the technology and/or computer crime courses are being exposed to information about the use of technology by terrorists.
It this thread discuss with each other, what you have learned about how your specific course relates to terrorism. You might discuss the definition, causation, types, history or even the technology being used. At a minimum, you should create one original post and respond to one post.

| In Management of Criminal Justice Information Systems the Internet is discussed as the largest type of network. Technology such as this has allowed radical extremist to network themselves all over the world. People who share the same ideology can communicate with each other and form smaller sleeper cells. Once people are brainwashed into believing something they can be easily persuaded into carrying out devastating acts such as a bombing or other terrorist activities. John Walker, "The American Taliban", is an example of a person who was recruited over the Internet to join the Taliban.

| The internet is a widely used network that allows access to almost everyone at a click of a mouse. The internet provides a vast amount of information and especially with emails and instant messaging people are able to communicate with eachother in a matter of seconds. Anyone can find out any amount of information involving any type of topic which in this case it involves terrorism. Here terrorist can communicate with one another and share information and inform groups within or coalitions. I agree with you it is highly ture that many people are "brainwashed" or mislead by means of lack of information or not taught the right way. They beleive the first thing they here or by someone that they confide in. The internet can be a great sourve of information if used wisely however but can also be misused, when this occurs that it cause serious harm to anyone.

Technology is a amazing tool it is a source of information that is given to us in a matter of seconds. For example our PSAP's in our emergency centers give us the information of a person dialing 911 as well as their address and phone number in a matter of seconds even if the call doesnt go all the way through. Another example would be our ALI system and reverse number search, by putting in a phone number we can trace where a call is coming from. Cad systems provide immediate information to local police agencies and the dispatchers to better assist the officers in the field, it also keeps track of calls for service. MDC's are can be good and bad in my opinion. They provide accurate information to the officers in the field but can be distraction to officers in the field which can bring up an issue regarding Officer safety. NCIC is wonderful tool although thought of at a Federal level it gives great information to state and local agencies. Without the help of NCIC Police Officers would have a tougher time obtaining pertinent information.
The internet provides a vast amount of information to law officials that can be both good and bad because some of this information is also available to criminals. On the other hand it is a great means of communication for someone in Community Policing because they can answer public questions and act in a timely matter of concerns that the public may have. Technology is widely used although it may have it's glitches at times it is a good source of information.

This is an easy one for me since I am taking a terrorism course. In the book, Understanding Terrorism, we've learned about the history of terrorism, the changes its gone through, the history of various terrorist organizations, and how the terrorist organizations operate. We've learned about domestic terrorists, national terrorists and international terrorists. In my second paper, I researched the aspect of the internet is used as a tool for terrorism on many different levels.

In response to the use of the internet as a tool for terrorism, it can be used as a communication tool for terrorists. Much of the planning for 9-11 was conducted via crypted messages on the internet and e-mails. The internet can be used for recruiting. A "recruiter" for a terrorist can target people all over the world to recruit everything from fighters to financial supporters, to highly skilled and eductated members who have the know how to make nuclear or biological weapons. Further the internet can be used to commit cyber terrorism. Look at the guy in France who turned their stock market upside down by hacking their stock exchange. Hypethetically, a terrorist could do the same thing and cause the downward spiral of a large corporation that employs tens of thousands of people.

This subject hits very close to home since I work out of LAX (considered the #1 terrorist target in southern California). While learning about Police technology, I've discovered that it would not be hard for a terrorist to figure out how to disrupt all the emergency communication systems in an attack. It brought to mind the problems that NYPD and NYFD had on 9/11. They could not communicate with each other due to damaged communication centers and differrent radio frequencies. I feel that not preparing for such an event would cost lives. However, I have learnd in this course about back up systems that could be implemented. Such as analog radios could always back up digital radios.
I feel that the more I learn about different ways to communicate, the more prepare I will be if that fateful day ever arrives.

Hi Rhartkop,
I'm Robert Corchado witrh LAX PD. I was reading your post concerning people that are brain washed like John Walker "The American Taliband". I totally agree with your assessment. I have talked to people that solicit money for their religion at LAX. These people range from the very young to the very old and believe that they were born on this earth for their cause. It's scary when you thing about how many dangerous causes are out there.
Stay safe, Robert...

| I am currently in the technology class and while most of the topics are not directly related to terrorism, they all overlap. While we will all agree that technology is a wonderful thing, it is also wonderful for those who wish us harm. The internet makes their ability to communicate much easier. They can all network from hidden locations to formulate their next terrorist attack. Not only is communication easier, the ability to track their movements and thus intercept an attack is made more difficult.

| I completely agree with your assessment of how technolgy can be used against us by different terrorist organizations and cells. While we all love technology, it certainly can lead to our undoing if we are not very careful with it
