| I totally agree with the last post. Law enforcement has rules they have to play by, terrorists don't. The military also has rules to play by, they are sent over to these countries to play police officers and they are not. There job is to fight, let them fight and take care of business. With regards to technology and terrorism. Technology has increased the awareness because of the media and the terrorists ability to broadcast the events. The terrorists now have the internet to send their tapes of suicide bombings and of beheadings. The media doesn't help the matter by giving all of the terrorists prime news coverage.
Terrorists can now reach more people faster and promote their beliefs to a larger audience. They can also produce more fear to society with the medias coverage, the goal they are looking to achieve.

| I think, just like the rest of the world, anyone with a plan to commit a terrorist act can recruit and research from the comfort of his/her own livingroom via the internet. A terrorist can accumulate financial backers for his/her cause and form a network of faceless members all working toward the same end. The anonymity is pretty scary if you think about it, very hard to infiltrate or eliminate.

| When they get us to live in fear they have already prevailed. They don't have to lift a finger or a weapon. Unfortunately, the media often aids terrrorists in their mission because it suits their goals as well.

Terrorism is growing stronger everyday and getting closer to our day to day world. I attended a class today at Pasadena City College on Campus Terrorism and Tactics. We learned about the Russian Tragedy at the Beslan school. All schools in the United States are having to pay stronger attention to terrorism around the world and how we will combat it here at home.

I agree. The media is the terrorists number one tool. In order for the media to bite on an incident, the body count needs to increase. Terrorists will try to out due the last event so they can get more shock value and increase the media coverage.

CJM410-
It has been suggested that pre 9/11, law enforcement officers that were fortunate to be involved in task forces were restricted to domestic investigations. Post 9/11, we not only find TLOs involved in counter-terrorism task forces, but many agencies are involved in Joint Terrorism Task Forces.
Many task forces, including one that I used to belong to (drug related) began to also focus on counter-terrorism teams. Many local and state officers found themselves being deputized as feds!!!

As a Crisis Negotiator, I find myself in more and more classes related to terrorists and learning ways to communicate through negotiations, only to find that most of the time, there is no negotiating!!!
We also studied one of the most horrific acts of terrorism in Russia, "The Terror at Beslan". US law enforcement has a great deal to learn...and be thankful for (that as of now, we don't have to deal with that level of domestic terrorism, daily).

| I agree with you about the media. I don't think they really think hard about what they are putting out there sometimes. Years ago the news was more news, not their personal opinions or one sided beliefs of how the world should be. I think alot of these reporters and news organizations play right into the hands of terrorist groups by giving them credibility by indirectly sympathizing with them and their causes. Lately I also get the impression they don't put our millitray men and women in a positive light. I think we should all remember to be thankful that we live in this country and have the rights we do.

| I agree we are finding it very beneficial to track some crooks and crimes by myspace, facebbok etc. our training center, as I am sure many others do, offer courses in investigations through those sites.

Terrorits groups can be catergorized along a number of different dimensions, the FBI seperates terrorism into two broad catergories; domestic and international.
Terrorists use a variety of weapons however Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) is a weapon of choice. IED's can easliy be used by terrorists in numerous explosive devices.
IED's are
- Constructed in a non-standard manner, incorporating explosives or destructive, lethal, noxious, pyrotechnic, or incendary chemical,
- Designed to kill, injure, destroy, disfigure, distract, or harass
- Delivered to a target
IED's are initiated either by electric or non-electric; and as visible or concealed
IED's have four basic compenents:
- Power Supply
- Initiator
- Explosives
- Switches
IED's are delivered a variety of ways. Vehicles are often used for delivery. IED's may also be placed by hand, thrown, or projected by a mortar or rocket device. A terrorist or an unsuspecting person such as a postman can deliver and IED.
It is important that law enforcement develop incident response procedures to terrorists attacks. Training and development of personnel is critical.
In Management of Criminal Justice Information Systems Course, I have learned how technology can be used to detect, prevent, solve and counter acts of terrorism.

I agree. It is a matter of time before a school take over occurs in the U.S. It is critical that first responders be prepared to engage the terrorists when it does happen. The key is to engage the terrorists quickly and aggressively, before they have the opportunity to take many hostages, barricade and fortify themselves.
My organization has included terrorists’ attacks into our Immediate Action Rapid Deployment (Active Shooter) Course. Mental, emotional and physical preparation is crucial.
I also recommend that all patrol officers carry in their patrol cars the equipment necessary to resolve a school take over, to include but not limited to, Urban Police Rifles, ammunition, bolt cutters, ballistic shields, and pry bars.

| I too think that we will have a school take over. Not just a school shooting but a complete take over like they had in Bresslin, Russia. One that will last for several hours if not days. In my area the elementary, junior high and high schools are all pretty secure but the community college has serious problems. I have been telling them my concerns for years but like most things they can't or won't do anything because of funding. But of course if something happens when I am out there I am going to sue the pants off them because they have done virtually nothing to secure the campus. We carry shotguns, rifles, extra ammo, bolt cutters, etc. We also have excellent training in active shooter scenario's and train at not only the training center but have training at the schools with staff. So we are prepared, it is the schools that are not preparing that will be suffer. We are actually taking a proactive stance with our training and advertising it and have invited the media to some of the training to broadcast we are training on it. Part of our hope is that if a terrorist is planning on hitting a school and are searching for an area to hit that they are aware of what our county is doing so they will choose another area. So sorry if we are pushing them into another area.

| I am currently enrolled in both the technology and terrorism course. Both these courses have really opended my eyes to the problem with terrrorism foreign and domestic. I find it interesting that we seem to be keep confronting issues today that began thirty years ago. I think alot of this is human nature. It is like picking teams for a sport on the playground when we were young. There is always someone that is going to sit out and feel disinfranchised. As time goes by this individual may resort to extreme measures to be noticed and even justify terrible things as necessary. All we can do is attempt to identify these nuts and put the screws to them.
