All Union Institute and University Winter Semester 2008
(Includes Session I, Session II and Semester Learners)
You must make two posts to receive full credit.
Discuss how what you have learned thus far will impact your career. For those of you currently in criminal justice, take the lead. Tell your future colleagues how you see what you are learning having a direct impact on what you are doing now. For those of you whose careers are yet in the future, how as what you have learned changed what you think about your potential career? Recall that you are to, at a minimum, make one original post, and then respond to one other person.

A quality Records Management System (RMS) that is user friendly and updated expeditiously is essential for a police agency, especially the investigator. When our agency transitioned to one 4 years ago, it was met with opposition. Now the benefits of being able to track cases through the court system, search the database by name, address, telephone number, etc.......far outweighs the inconvenience we experienced when it was first implemented. I can't tell you how many times our database has provided me with information that would otherwise require a search warrant to obtain, saving me hours in writing.
This system is only as good as the information entered into it. Only recently has it become clear to me why my Sergeant, when I was a young patrol officer, was such a stickler on gathering every bit of personal information on a subject listed in a citation, F.I. card or report. I know now that it could mean the difference between solving a serious crime and not. An RMS is the best way of extracting information that officers gather every day. Not only should a Crime Analyst have privileges to the system, but every officer.

This course,"Police Technology", has open my eyes to the amount of information that is out there for me and would-be-predators as well. I found that I can be more effective in investigating a case due to the "Try This" assignments. I wish I could have had this information early on in my career. What was a big eye opener is the amount of information that a predator can gather in the internet to victimize trusting people. The two 50 question exam where no joke either. However, I learned so much about computer viruses and working with other agencies in sharing resources.
This is my last course before graduating with my B.A. dagree. It has been a great educational journey that I will miss. I would like to thank all of my educators that have taken the time to explain the courses to me, which is not always easy.
Thanks again, Robert Corchado...

| In my years as working as a Police Dispatcher I have seen technology change rapidly. The technology available today can reslut in a positive and negative way. For example: It has impacted my career because it has allowed me to read and study the amount of information that is available out there and has given me the opportunity to share with other members in the Police Department ideas that could make our workload easier. It is amazing to me to see all the websites that are available and the information that is avaliable to Police Agencies that allows them to investigate unsolved crimes. I have recently spent a lot of time learning and reading information that is easily accessed through websites that I never knew was out there. In the past crime solving and investigating was done manually one would have to pull a case number and from there pull another case package so on and so on. Technology today allows one to pull information on almost anything on with a click of a button. Another positive side to technology is that we have been able to help a lot of victims, for instance, one who may have been a victim to Identity theft. A negative side to some of this technology is it can giveone too much information on a individual and vreate a larger workload do to other findings one may have that may tie an individual to another unsolved crime. I beleive technolgy was created with the intention of helping Police Officers solve crimes however it also allowed criminals to commit crimes in the comfort of their own home. 2 examples would be Crimes against children and Identity theft have risen in recent years. What I have learned so far is that police technolgy has opened my eyes to the improvements in the Police Departments and by has allowed Police Officers to assist other members of the community with web information that could assist them in concerns they may have.

| I agree it is importantnt to put as much information as well as the correct information into the system that is available on a person. This would certainly eliminate any confusion. There is so much information out there available for Law Officials, but it takes time and training to be able to be proficient on everything that is out there. Police work has changed so much in recent years. You mentioned FI cards they are very critical to a Police Officers job. I currently work as a Dispatcher and I realize that as much informtation that we can gather from a caller regarding a subject is just as vital as those FI cards, especially since a lot of information to Police Officers is so readily available to them on their MDC.

Congrats on your completion of your degree. i have one more set of classes. I must say that I agree when it comes to the weishing zI knew this stuff earlier. I guess its better late then never. The tests were probably the hardest thing for me, but taught me alot about computers and technology.
You are right. We must remember that whatever we have access too we must assume the deviates and ahckers do too, and that scares me
Good luck
