This is participation number two for students in the following courses:

All Union Institute and University Spring/Summer 2009

(Includes Session I, Session II and Semester Learners)

You must make two posts to receive full credit.

Discuss how what you have learned thus far will impact your career.  For those of you currently in government service, take the lead.  Tell your future colleagues how you see what you are learning having a direct impact on what you are doing now.  For those of you whose careers are yet in the future, how as what you have learned changed what you think about your potential career?  Recall that you are to, at a minimum, make one original post, and then respond to one other person.

Most of the chapter readings in Business, Government and Society relate to questionable ethical conduct by people in a position of authority.  The questionable conduct led to companies or organizations success initially but eventually the unethical conduct led to destruction.  In the readings, the leaders set extremely high expectations that caused the employees to act unethical to meet the goal.  Because of the readings, I recently held a squad meeting with my subordinates to reinforce the core of values and ethical decisions.  I also re-evaluated the Section’s goals to ensure it was achievable.

What I learned thus far in Organizational Development will impact my career presentely and as I promote through the chain of command. I learned that organizational developoment is a strategy for change that intervenes in the social processes of an organization. Organizational development focuses on culture and processes. The LAPD has been around for many years and its a culture in itself. To address the issues that I will face as a supervisor and manager, I have to understand that change must come from a total system change. Also to make the LAPD a better organization both people and the organization have to change in order to create a win-win situation.

What I learned will have a direct impact in my current assignment because I learned many different tecniques to identify and creatively resolve problems outside of the traditional way. For example the "purchase of expertise model" and the "process consulting model."

I agree with JSandoz’ post that OD teaches leaders and supervisors techniques so they can learn how to work on the organization’s issues to make the work place better.  It should be a win for the organization and the employee.

Thus far I am very pleased , what the progam and material offer.  In general terms I have learned the principals, definitions, applications, intended results, along with unintended results, of processes, used in organizations from business, government and society, some processes of which I have used for years, as a police supervisor.  I have a broader understanding and look at things more critically and make even more sound decisions related to change and policy making under the perview of my span of control.  Additionally, I know this program will assist me with future promotions and in future secondary career choices.

Jerretta, I would agree with you that the understanding that, to make change in an organization, one has to address the culture first, as being one of the most important lessons learned in this course.  For supervisors of mid-management like us, this is valuable knowledge and insight.

David I agree with your post.  This course has taught me alot about the broader aspect of managing. It will definitely prepare me for outside opportunities as well as additional tools in assisting the department with future situations.

This class has really showed the importance of applying your organizations code of ethices in your day to day operations. Our text book along with our class discussions showed the downside of putting our integrity on the back-burner like Rockefellar of The Standard Oil Company, or Martha Stewart and last but not least, Rick Scott of The Columbia/HCA. All of these individuals in one shape or form neglected to use business ethics.

The class has thus far also shown some of the several external influences that our organizations deal with like the local and state governments.

David, In regards to your remarks about how you now view issues pertaining to change and policy making in a more critical manner since you have started this corse, I completely agree with you. This course almost forces you to revaluate some of your unit's policies and ideas.

This is it for me and I can move forward in my career. This program has brought me into contact with some of the sharpest individuals in policing. I think I learned as much watching and listening to those people around me in the CJM program as I did doing my class work. The amount of resources at my disposal (People-Information) now will continue to enrich my career and help me to strive to better myself professionally and personally.

Your point is exactly what I have gotten out of this too. Understanding the processes of our profession and now knowing how to apply them more specifically while making decisions. My confidence level has definately increased through this program and given me the tools to fall back on as I learn to become an effective supervisor/manager by simply knowing what to do.

This class has shown me how important technology is for today's law enforcement officer. I am grateful for the opportunity to have gained some useful information about the technology I use on an everyday basis to conduct my job while out on patrol. I hope to continue to learn how to use technology effectively and not be hesitant when new technology becomes available for law enforcement (those of us who work for the LAPD need not worry since once we get new technology it's already outdated when it hits the streets..) I am certain since I am still only 5 years into the game that I will see countless changes in technology and I am excited to see what happens.

Being a part of this program will definitely help me succeed to promoting to a position of leadership within the Department at some point. But for now, I'm just having fun being out on the streets.

DCrew-

Great to see that you have plans for after you retire from your current employer. I hope that you are successful with that.

Prior to taking this course and a couple others, I thought I knew more than I really did. I was familiar with the micro work place, where to get my equipment, department politics, blah, blah, blah. What I failed to realize was there was so much more outside of this tiny closed world we create for ourselves. It seems that at least our management prefers it that way too. All of this thinking, knowledge and opening of doors for change and growth creates work for people, they dont like that. I think this course has made me more competetive for promotion and more confidence when having discussions with management and supervision at the agency.
