Now that Ive been exposed to managment practice, Im sure that the education and training Im receiving here at Union will allow me to better manage and assess my work productivity. This class has given me some insight as to the inner workings of criminal justice management which I feel will make me a more competent and reliable supervisor when that time presents itself.
I plan on becoming more involved with projects at work. I look forward to accepting collateral duties and demonstrating my ability to effectively execute such duties. As a future supervisor, I believe I will be better prepared and equipped to deal with subordinates and the problems that arise on a day to day basis.

ERIC MILLS......
It is great to hear that you went back to school not because you wanted to promote but simply because you wanted to. I think that makes school that much more enjoyable because it is not something you "HAVE" to do it is something you"WANT" to do. Hope that made sense. For instance with me I have always been interested in Biology an Chemistry so I think once I am done with school I am going to go back and take those classes just for fun.

| It appears a lot of us have quite a bit in common. As long as we continue to learn, we will continue to improve and progress.

Prior to the Technology class I had taken two classes at UI&U. The Tech class is interesting in that I am learning things about technology that I was always curious about, but never took the time to learn. I would have to say that some of the information is too detailed at a police practitioner's level, our agency has I.T. people to handle the heavy lifting. However, the information given in the class will help me with the coordination and implementation of programs and systems when I do have to work with those propeller heads. Now I will have some idea as to what they are talking about. This will help in the integration of ideas between a practitioner, who will use the system, and the I.T. guy that buys the systems for us to use but may not be as familiar with the real-world applications of it.
Also, I have to say that the ethics class was very interesting, more than I though it would be. It inspired me to think about those issues and broadened my view of ethics beyond the over-talked-about, "free cup of coffee" issues.

J Ponce:
Good for you. I can tell you from a sergeant's point of view, that a lot of the information that you will get from these courses will directly benefit you as a supervisor.
As for me, I try and keep a balance life between work, education, and play.

| The on line forums presentations were good, especially the NCJRS website. I had no idea these sites existed until this class. The sites have already helped me a few times at work and with issue papers in this class. The issue paper on situational crime prevention also helped. It gives another perspective on how to be successful in the reduction of crime.

I agree, I have also taken about 20 years off from school. I look back and wish I would have stuck it out; however I don't think I would be where I am today. I have two more sessions after this and another 15 years towards putting in my 30. A few years ago I was kicking around going back to school. Now that I'm here, I'm even thinking about sticking around for a Master's.
Good luck to everyone!

Ray,
I agree with both of your comments. The website presentations were an excellent way to learn about some pretty good resources for us. It's pretty amazing how many of us have gone back to school after a significant period of time. I have had the same thoughts about a Master's too.

Technology in law enforcement is progressing at warp speed. Those who are not aware of contemporary issues and innovations in technology will be left behind.
We owe it to our communities and constituents to provide the best possible service level, which includes the utilization of modern technology. If a law enforcement member wants to be a leader in their organization, it is critical to be able to grasp the concepts and theories of such technology and plan for its implementation.
This course allows us to develop a basic understanding of what technology is available to us, including its application to law enforcement, and plant the mental seed that we'll use to adapt to the new processes.

Good plan jponce. The best way to learn and develop your skills is to put your knowledge to work by volunteering to work on projects. And on a personal level for you, the decision makers in your department will be eager to reward and promote those who are willing to put in the extra effort to improve the organization.

| I am in my second session at Union and it has been great! The first two classes have given me a better idea of the thought processes and what it will take in a management position. I find I am using the knowledge I am getting in these classes quite frequently!

| This is my first semester at Union and im in the same boat as many of you. Its been some time since ive been to school. In my short time here I have learned alot from the instructors as well as my fellow students due to their knowledge and experience in Law Enforcement. By obtaining my degree, I hope to set a good example for my children and be a more efficient leader in my career.

Actually I am quite surprised! I also, have not been to school in many years, and heard that in these types of programs you could just purchase your degree. (kinda of disappointed I actually have to work/learn) I am in my second group of classes, and have already been exposed to concepts that not only I haven't thought of, but that no one at work has introduced to me. Each course has broaden my horizons and will make me a better cop.

This is my final on-site class with Union and it is amazing how fast time has flown by. I have been making futile attempts to complete my degree for the past 15 years. I finally found a program that worked for my schedule and family. The courses have been outstanding and challenged my writing and researching abilities. Leadership, task completion and how to be successful in a promotional process have been the key learning points for me.
The web-site presentations were informatative and useful. I have already referred back to some of the sites during my current assignment.
