This is my first class at Union. I just graduated with my AA through a different on-line program, and have used what I learned on several occasions. I returned to school to fulfill a personal goal. I am very close to retirement and will not be using this degree for career enhancement, just professional development.
The on-line and accelerated programs make returning to school much easier on those of us who graduated high school or junior colleges back in the days of horse drawn carriages.
Congrats to everyone who is on their last class.

I agree with many of my classmates I started this off as just an advancement tool. Now I see this is more as a career saver in my opinion. Its making me have a different outlook other than just "Taking people to jail'. Although that is still my highlight. I have been finding myself looking at things from a supervisor's perspective though I am still just a young Deputy. I actually have felt more involved with the job rather than just doing it. The things that I thought were simple are now more complex as I read and see other non sworn civilians and sworn officers opinons and facts. I'm pretty excited because this is just my second session and I have learned a lot from my previous classes and feel I am getting my MONEYS WORTH.....

| When I initially embarked upon my journey in returning to school I came into it with the attitude that all I wanted to do was get my diploma because it was a necessity for not only a raise but a requirement to promote. Now that I am nearing the finish line, I have realized that obtaining a college degree is more than just taking a few classes, writing a few papers, and reading way to many chapters from books that have dominated my shelves (Mainly due to their bulk). Returning to college at the Union Institute has broadened my perceptions of leadership within and outside of law enforcement. This particular course did not reveal to me any new technologies a, however what this course provided was the technical background, the history, and in some cases clarification behind the use of those technologies. I would highly recommend not only this course but this University to anyone looking to return to school.

| It is very nice to hear someone talk about the value of education not in the context of doing it to promote or for some financial gain. I initially started with those two things in mind, however I have since realized that education is much more than that. Congrats on putting in 33 years.

| I'm on the same boat with cuffs. I returned to school because I wanted to promote. After completing my second session, I began to appreciate and understand the true value of completing my college education.

There are many things I have learned since I began attending this management course. One aspect has been the research techniques I have learned. I have found that research conducted for the coursework is similar to research conducted in law enforcement. Learning to evaluate research information is the key to obtaining the best supporting information for your theories. The technology course seems to be the most interesting for me and the most important, since technology is advancing in law enforcement at an accelerated rate. This course provides a broad foundation of technology, which I will be able to use as a manager.

Max,
At times it can be crazy with school, work, and the kid’s sports. However, the management skills you develop while juggling all of these tasks will benefit you in the business environment. It certainly will make you a better leader and will help you mentor and develop others.

| Well this is my last last class with UI&U. I am very excited to be almost done in just a couple of weeks. I will now be able to promote within the Probation Department. School has helped me to realize that if I set my mind to do something, I will be able to achieve it. School is a challenge for anyone due to having to balance work, school and a personal life all at once. However, I definitely encourage anyone that wants to join in the journey of a higher education. Good luck everyone.

I do believe this course of study has had a valuable impact on my career. The information I have learned thus far, has provided me with a stronger foundation in relation to my own personal knowledge of information technology. I truly feel I have a more acute awareness regarding implementation of new technologies and ideals, from both a manager and line-employee perspective. I have a better understanding as to the importance of critiquing new technologies and ideals prior to their implementation, including the deliberation of both efficiency and effectiveness.

jponce-arcadia,
I have to agree with your assessment. I also believe that what I have learned will aid me to be a more "compentant" supervisor, should the oppurtunity present itself someday. This course had also motivated me to become more involved in future projects that I can impliment, using the knowledge I have obtained.

| These two classes that I am currently enrolled in are my first of eight for the completion of my Bachelor's degree. Taking these courses has been an overwhelming experience, but for the positive! These classes are a lot of work. This is because there is so much information out there that we need to learn to constitute more productivity out of our daily work routine. Arming ourselves with more than an academy and a weapon; school and a higher education can only benefit not only yourself, but those around you, I applaud those that are returning to school after 15-20 years (myself included), it's not easy to fit into a busy adult schedule. For the younger students; it's a great choice, one that you won't regret. No matter what, we will receive an education that will last a lifetime, whether it is for promotional goals or just personal. Either way you benefit from these courses and the people you meet along the way.

Erosalesunion,
CONGRATULATIONS! When I read posts like yours, it reminds me that the end is attainable. I look forward to finishing so that I may cruise through the rest of my career with the confidence that I will obtain by having come to Union Institute & University (geez, that sounded like I'm writing a commercial for this school... lol) Good luck to you in your future and to all those that are on your heels...

I have to also agree with you. Ive been in law enforcment for a number of years now without any interest to promote. Now that Im back in school, it has caused me to re think my position. Im really motivated and looking forward to applying myself overall as well as continuing my education!
Joe,
I think you would make a great supervisor. I'm surprised that you have not made an effort to promote. To think 15 years ago we were just trying to make it through the academy, and now, we are at Union continuing our formal education in an attempt to promote. Your motivation is evident, and I think you will be as successful as you want to be in the future.
