This is the third discussion question thread for students in the following courses:
All Union Institute tutorial.
All Union Institute Moorepark.
Cal State Fullerton students in CJ 315 and CJ330
Discuss how what you have learned thus far will impact your career. For those of you currently in criminal justice, take the lead. Tell your future colleagues how you see what you are learning having a direct impact on what you are doing now. For those of you whose careers are yet in the future, how as what you have learned changed what you think about your potential career? Recall that you are to, at a minimum, make one original post, and then respond to one other person.

Fellow Learners,
I feel that what I have learned so far in the course has greatly impacted my career thus far. I feel that my understanding of terrorism and its history will improve my ability to keep my community safe. It is always good to know about who you are fighting and what they believe in. That I know will improve my ability to stop it.

Dear Fellow Learners,
I am excited about taking this terrorist course. The reason is that terrorism is a world issue that is affecting the world TODAY. It is affecting law enforcement in the national, state, and local level. This course has allowed me to investigate terrorism in depth.

I am currently in a management position for a moderate sized law enforcement agency. The Terrorism class will certainly increase my knowledge in this topic and assist me in providing meaningful feedback to the response to terrorism by my department.
Having already been through first line supervision and now being in management, the supervision class will help me in several ways. I will be able to expand my knowledge and methods for being effective in my position. I have also learned techniques that I can encourage the supervisors who work for me to use to develop their skills.

Throughout the course, Computer Crime, I have gained an understanding and appreciation for the tools and technology used in this rapidly growing field.
With the advent of the various types of computer crime, i.e, Hacking, Cracking and Phreaking, technology has changed, and law enforcement has had to change to remain vigilant in its pursuit of these criminals.
I have applied the knowledge I have obtained throughout this course to my development as a law enforcement officer at a small police agency.

mramosunion,
I liked what you said about understandinng who you are fighting and their belief system. I agree that to know your adversary is to know how to deal with them. It's working smarter, not harder.

Hello learners,
I'm back in school and excited. I'm currently taking Terrorism and getting a better understanding of it, but I still have more to learn. I no it has been affecting the world for several years, but I never pay attention to it until 9/11. This will enhance my knowledge for future decisions in Law enforcement.

I have learned so much this semester...I have really seen how certain types of "theories" can be applied to my community.
Conflict theory
Strain theory
and especially
Labeling theory

Hello everyone,
I am a junior and have changed my mind numerous times on what career i would like to have. I think i have finally decided that i will shift my focus to psych instead of CJ but still keep it as my minor because the information i learned will help me in the future. I want to be a clinical psychologist and work with troubled youngsters....those involved in gangs, drugs, violence, etc. At first I did not care for the criminology class because it deals mainly with theories of why people commit crime and why the dont. I realized that it has helped me already to be open minded. The information on theories will help me in my future career because it is important to be open minded, and it will be easier for me to understand why people do the things they do. The theories opened my eyes and made me see things from different perspective. This class out of all the other CJ classes i have taken has taught me very important lessons.

I think it is great you are taking a terrorism class. Like yourself, I did not pay attention nor did i really know it existed untill 9/11. This is a good time to be taking the class, having that 9/11 occured recently, you can gain knowledge about terrorism and relate it to a recent act that you can relate to because it affected how you live your life today!

Hello,
I think you have made a great decision in taking CJ courses to understand the youth. I work for the LA Cnty Probation Dept. in the juvenile system. They need help! We have psychologist at our work place that are so blind sided from the daily battles of these trouble youths and basically do not understand their acts of gang violence. I wish you luck in your career. Hopefully by your expertise you are able to help them and get a better understanding of them.

| I have learned a great deal from this class. The most important would be to more cautious when using the internet and to make sure that my information is secure. I have learned about the rise in identity theft and how to protect myself and what to do in the event that I become a victim. This class has definitely be an enlightening experience.

| I agree with you, Terrorism is important yet dangerous issue. Gangs in some areas can be regard to as terrorists in the own community. So terrorism can be not only a global issue but can be something close to home. As you mentioned, I look forward to an interesting and rewarding experience in this program and hope that you attain the same goals.

The knowledge that I have learned from both courses will help me better understand crime theories and terrorism. I hope to apply what I have learned into my job in corrections.

| I agree with you. I too have been able to apply many theories outside of class. These theories explain a good deal of how society functions and the cause and effects of certain theoretical situations in society

| I have learned many theories in the 330 class. Everything from terrorism, gangs, theories and theorists and ways to apply these theories to different communites and the larger society. The ideas i have learned in this class clearly explain delinquency and criminal justice if one is to enter law enforcement. With that said i will continue to apply these theories to my surroundings as well as my everyday activities

So far, what I have learned in class has dramatically changed my attitudes and perceptions of my potential future in law enforcement. For example, last week's discussion on terrorism showed me that their is much more to the encounters experienced by law enforcement. I learned it was important to make distinctions between occurrences so that better solutions could be formulated. Terrorism and terrorist are a diverse bunch, and class discussions have changed my perception how such issues should be solved. In addition, class has changed my attitude about law enforcement in regards to physical and more academic approaches. For example, class has showed how an academic approach has benefited law enforcement. Examples include the class discussions on computer databases and crime mapping. Also, the discussion on technology in law enforcement further validates the professionalism of policing. I had thought of policing more as a trade than a profession. As society continues to evolve so does the law enforcement function. Most importantly, class has changed my perception that law enforcement cannot dramatically change in the future. The lecture on Community Policing revealed that their are important distinctions between the COPPS model of policing and older models, and that policing does change. Finally, class has changed my attitudes towards policing in that I now believe college courses are more practical for preparing persons interested in law enforcement than I once thought.

The concepts learned in class have helped in my understanding of what law enforcement encounters. In addition, I also believe the concepts discussed in class are important so that persons in law enforcement do not forget their purpose as agents of the law. Finally, I do believe concepts learned in class are applicable to real life situations but, I believe that no theory or concept is fully applicable to what may be encountered. Concepts and theories are useful in that they are sometimes interdependent and sometimes overlap and, this aids in my understanding of encountered occurrences.

I am at the tail end of my college life; fifth year, graduating senior. I have learned a lot about the criminal justice system and politics (I am a pol. sci. minor and cj major). As for how this knowledge will help me in my future career(s) I am not sure. The reason for this is because I am not entirely sure what I want to do with my life yet. I am considering returning next year to get a credential to teach social science in k-12. I have never considered myself as someone who would do well in law enforcement, I do not do well under that sort of pressure.
I hope to use what I have learned to further my education and use my bachelors as a building block for other things to come. Also, I hope that it helps me get my foot in the door doing something so I can pay the bills while I continue to go to school.
As for this class in particular, it has been very educational. I have not really had a professor that was as open about polcing as Prof. Foster. He has provided a more down to earth and realistic example of what policing is like. He has also helped me to better understand what it takes to be a police officer, and if I wished to do it, what steps I would need to take.

This relply is not directed at any one person particular, but more for those that are already in law enforcement. I was just curious as to whether anyone here has actually been on a terrorist threat type call, and how that experience was? I am interested to know more about how local law enforcement agencies deal with/handle these types of calls. Thanks.
