
How are we unique?
Union Institute and
University recognizes the demanding professional qualifications of law
enforcement and police personnel through a unique articulation agreement
which awards you 32 hours of college credit for your basic POST certificate.
Moreover, through our certified learning program it is possible to recognize
your advanced POST certified training through the certification of an
additional 30 units college credits. Most tenured police officers
begin our program with over 60 units and graduate with a BS in less than one
year.
Who is the Los Angeles County Program Coordinator?
Professor John Andrews retired as a Lieutenant form the Los Angeles
County Sheriff’s Department after completing more than 32 1/2 years of
service. He has a variety of law enforcement experience to draw upon,
from front line riotous situations and jail disturbances, to planning
the take-over of the Los Angeles Community College District law
enforcement function. Throughout his career, particularly as a
supervisor and manager, he performed in the role of instructor/mentor,
identifying and implementing a variety of training programs. He was a
facilitator for the Los Angeles County’s Leadership Institute and
participated in a variety of management and deployment programs. He
has a Masters Degree in Public Administration and a Baccalaureate
Degree in Journalism. He received his teaching credentials from the
University of California, Los Angeles.
Currently, he performs in the role of advisor and adjunct at the Los
Angeles Center instructing in a variety of Criminal Justice, Public
Administration, Management and Humanities courses. Additionally, he
instructed courses in Criminal Justice and Political Science at other
college campuses as well. For the last two years, he has worked as a
part time advisor and instructor for Union Institute and University.
The adjunct and teaching assignments have kept him up-to-date with
current concepts and trends in the educational field.
John's concept on education: "I believe the world is a stage on
which we all must perform our life’s role. To be competitive, all of
us must know how to learn and how to think. Those of us in the field
of education must ensure that we impart this knowledge."
Who are our instructors?
Most of the criminal justice management degree instructors are retired police officers
with stellar academic credentials. In the Los Angeles office there is
over 100 years of police and law enforcement experience among the core
faculty alone. Additional faculty consists
of high-quality, part-time adjuncts who are full-time or retired
practitioners like you; Your core course instructor not only knows the theory, but
has done the job. The core course instructors specialize in all facets of the criminal
justice management and the criminal justice system.
Where and When does learning take place?
Currently, Criminal Justice Management courses in the Los
Angeles County program
are taught at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Twin Towers
facility. In the near future, courses will begin at a Los Angeles
County Sheriff's facility in the Santa Clarita area as well as in the East
San Gabriel Valley. Courses begin every eight weeks. Here is the
